Everything in Scientology is based on logic

Their mythology is ridiculous, but all mythology is, which is why I don’t subscribe to any.

Scientology deserves mocking just as any crazy cult does. Hence this thread.

Yep.

Good, then we’re agreed that this kind of religion is poisonous to civilized society and promotes a gang mentality.

Ultimately why I’ve been ripping on them for it.

At least the monotheists don’t charge you an arm and a leg for access to their copyright - protected mythology.

No, they just tell you that if you’re attracted to members of your own sex that you’re a horrible mistake that needs to be corrected, and that you’re going to burn forever in a pit of eternal hellfire, and convince parents to reinforce that message until teenaged kids end up killing themselves.

Oh, and that’s in the progressive United States. In other countries they’ll throw you in jail or beat you to death.

Monotheists, always doing the Lord’s work; convincing people that they still live in the dark ages and that witches need to be burned.

Not disagreeing with you, man. Just observing a salient feature of Scientology which differs from monotheism.

It was not ‘published’ in the UK, but Amazon will happily let you have a Kindle copy!

Scientologists aren’t fans either:

Interview with Lawrence Wright, author of Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief (basis for Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary of the same title premiering March 29).

At least Aristotle didn’t commit an “appeal to authority” fallacy.

I suppose they knock it because in additional to the “fanciful” part, it’s known to have been made up a handful of decades ago by a sub-standard science fiction writer, which adds an extra layer of contemptibility.

That is not necessarily a fallacy.

 Og, “Bob” and Allah, that book is fucking disgusting! Aboriginal Australian folklore about the Dreamtime is not philosophy! And there is no philosophy in the Old Testament apart from Ecclesiastes and Job! And no, come to think of it, Job doesn’t count either – it poses the Problem of Evil, but then God the Coward funks it by pulling rank.

I never had to pay to attend my church when I was a Catholic. Nor was I given a freeloader’s bill when I left, nor was I cut off from my Catholic friends and family. Also, the Church - as well as other Christian, Jewish and Islamic groups - runs hospitals, schools, refugee services, orphanages, and other such philanthropic endeavors.

Sure, Christian beliefs may not be any less irrational that Scientology’s; but as human institutions, Scientology is a whole helluva lot more sleazy and unethical than the Church.

You mean the Aristotelean logic that said that women and men have a different number of teeth, without his ever bothering to count them?

Have you been on this board long? We’ve got atheists who knock all that stuff.

Anyway, I’ll knock the Church of Scientology because of how they treat their members–the ones without millions of dollars.
