…before I go haring off to the pet store to find a cure, if there are any hamster keepers out there, can you tell me what you did in this situation? Poor little guy is looking shabby and I don’t want it to turn into mange.
Mine never had mites, thank goodness. I suggest you Google up a list of hamster-oriented websites (like this one) which should have loads of advice.
One noteworthy item I saw while looking up that website is that it’s important to be sure the problem is mites and not something else before you douse everything with chemicals or insecticides. The websites seem to have advice for how to confirm the diagnosis, or perhaps a small animal vet or exotic vet could help.
When our hamsters got mites, we used bird mite spray on them. I bought it at Petco in a little pump. It killed the mites with no apparent ill-effects.
The best part was how they held up their little hands in a “no, not that” gesture when I held them to spray them … .
