No matter who we are or how prepared we think we are, we all have our Homer Simpson moments. After all, how many news stories do we see about “the police officer, taken by surprise” or “the troops were ambushed in an area known for resistance”?
The one in Altoona, PA is great as well. Although the one night I was there at the same time as a large group of Scottish Travellers I did sleep a little lighter than usual. For nothing as it turned out. That place probably turned out to be the safest place in town - at least from them. They may not be totally honest but they aren’t idiots.
I can plainly say that in all the years of using Motel 6, Red Roof and the like I can only remember one where I felt honestly at risk at all. Mostly because of the people in and around the attached bar. I probably didn’t have to but I ate the fee and moved down the road another exit or two. Never had an issue, in terms of an altercation, at any of them.
More upscale though is another story. Usually some drunk from the wedding reception in the main ballroom but ----------

Quite a bizarre turn of events. Slave? WTH? Sounds like a pimp/hooker relationship where the pimp totally dominates and controls their women. Collects all the money too. Except here its a dude controlling other dudes and telling them who to rob.
Sure glad both these guys didn’t go into that motel room armed. I don’t think Chuck De Caro would have survived. He took three bullets just taking out one guy.

Chuck De Caro isn’t doing well. Shot July 1 and he went to rehab in mid Aug. His wife Lynn posted an update on his GoFund page. He was in severe pain and couldn’t walk more than a few steps. Nothing improved even after pain meds and three weeks rehab.
Then she tweeted these updates Sept 9 and 21. That sounds really bad. Maybe that shrapnel was the cause of his pain in rehab?
Thats the real world realities of getting shot. People thought he’d be up and around in a few weeks. Three months later he sounds as bad or worse than after the shooting. The news has long forgotten this story.
Their GoFund page only raised $6,000. It never got linked on any of the early news articles and people didn’t know about it. Its been taken down.
Life is hard. Even harder after a shooting like this.

To what extent is the motel legally liable? I read that Connie Francis won a big lawsuit after she was raped at Howard Johnsons.
Good point. Maybe they can sue the motel. I’d guess it depends on how much prior crime they’d had at that business? The criminals seemed pretty at ease robbing people at the motel.
The leader (currently charged) gives a gun to his buddy and drops him off near the guest’s rooms. There’s video of bad guy stalking around the hallways until he spots Lynne. Comes up from behind (as she opens the door), hard shove and he steps into the room. It looks to me like he’s done that move a few times before.

I’d hope a lawsuit might be possible if this motel had guests robbed before. They should have hired security if crime had occurred there recently.

Was this the motel B&E where the Wife gave the Husband a pistol and he shot the bad guy?
Yes. He was in the shower and came out to investigate the disturbance. dripping wet and nekkid he confronted the bad guy. He received 3 bullet wounds before he managed to kill the intruder.
