I need audio (or audio/video) examples of that snooty, English-y type of Indian (South Asian) accent. My friends and I used to call this a “convent school accent.” My google-fu is failing me. What would I search for?
Yes, I know, there’s probably a 100 different types of this accent. I just need a few examples so I can come up with my own version. Thanks.
Since there are 0ver 1,500 different languages, and goodness knows how many dialects in the Sub Continent, it is hardly surprising that English pronunciation will vary a lot.
Imran’s accent is too atypical for me. He doesn’t sound like anyone else, Indian or Pakistani, although of course I haven’t heard that many Pakistanis.
This video has two good candidates - Rajdeep Sardesai and Arun Jaitley. Both sound very snooty to me, Jaitley more so.
These are all good. Thanks! I think the Nehru accent is closest to what I’m thinking of.
So, one of my friends suggested that what I’m thinking of is how the Miss Briganza character from “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” would speak English if she was speaking English. I don’t know if that makes sense to anyone else, but she’s mostly speaking Hindi in that movie, so it’s difficult for me to get a read on her English accent.
You could try Siddharth Mallya. I heard him once in an interview speaking in what he presumably thought was an American accent, but it was unlike any American/British accent I’ve ever heard.
