Excel Q: format cell to accept numbers like an adding machine

You can set an adding machine to accept numbers with a fixed decimal point (it’s usually the “A” setting on the decimal swtich).

For example: if you enter 12345 into the machine, the number 123.45 will appear on the display.

Can you format cells in Excel to do this, too? I want Excel to assume every number I enter is currency with two decimal points.

The obvious way is to enter your values in one column and have another column that divides the first column by 100. You can fill that function down or across to as many cells as you like. Is that what you are looking for?

At least in Excel 2002:

Tools --> Options
In options, select the ‘edit’ tab

Check ‘Fixed Decimal’ and set it to 2.

Note: this affects every number you input unless you force the cell to text format.

Numbers already in the spreadsheet will not be affected when you turn this on.
Numbers will not change back if you turn it off.
