We are using Outlook 2007 with Exchange 7 here at work, and I have noticed a strange thing happening to me and other users around the campus. Exchange keeps creating a new default Calendar, Drafts, Journal, Tasks, Contacts & Notes folders - the existing ones are not deleted nor are their content, but because the new folder is marked as the default one, it causes all sorts of issues with appointment invitations, synchronising calendars and contacts, and so on.
The only other indication that anything is wrong is that I do get a regular error message in Synchronisation log folder saying that some folders couldn’t synchronise, but they appear to be synching fine…
I’m the kind of person who logs in at workstations all over the building, and my colleagues who are less “mobile” don’t seem to have this issue, so I’m assuming that is the cause of the problem, but how do I make it stop?
Google searching has proved fruitless as has browsing the Outlook Online Help - hopefully the dope will provide?
I’ve not done Exchange/Outlook configuration for a number of years now, but I used to do it all the time, so FWIW…
I think that this is an issue with profile creation on the workstation. When you log into a workstation you have not logged into before, there is no MAPI profile for Exchange (this is a setting that does not seem to roam with the user profile, as I recall). A Profile generation tool is run (profgen.exe in older versions of Exchange, but I don’t know what is current now). This should connect to the Exchange server and create the profile. However, if it is not configured correctly or does not see the Exchange server, the tool will not see the existing MAPI folders and will go ahead and create new ones. When the workstation does connect, the new folders have different GUIDs from the existing ones, so Synchronization creates the new ones on the server.
Unfortunately, your only solution is to talk to your support people. But Google Exchange MAPI Profile Creation for more information.
To expand on si blakely, are you using Roaming Profiles? That is, do your settings - e.g. Desktop and Favorites - follow you from PC to PC? If so, is the server on which your profile is stored full? Or is your roaming profile so large that there’s insufficient space on the local PC?
