Since I was a youngin’, every so often (maybe once a year), if I tweak my head the wrong way (and it doesn’t seem at all as if I’m really over extending my neck), I’ll get in almost incapacitating painful, hot surge the soots up the back of my head, and lands somewhere at the top where it smolders and I can finally shake it off.
Has anyone ever experienced this, or even know what I’m talking about?
Why and what is going on there (I’m guessing a nerve is getting plucked like a guitar string)?
I experienced the same thing and also describe it as ‘hot’, although others I’ve discussed this with describe it as a cold feeling. It does feel like a nerve is ‘plucked’, though I’m not sure of the medical term.
Hey, I’ve had this too, and nobody I ever mentioned it too knew what the heck I was on about! Sometimes I get it if I twist my neck, i.e. if I’m trying to peer round to see if I have something on my shoulder, say, but sometimes I can just be walking along and spronnnggg Like you say, it only happens infrequently, like once or twice a year. I thought maybe it was a tumour.
I wonder if it’s related to something I occasionally (but more frequently than once or twice a year) get when dropping off to sleep, or just relaxing in a chair. I’m not talking about the physical muscular jerk or twitch you sometimes get, but a kind of surge like the neck thing, only centred more in the back of my head. It sometimes feels almost electrical rather than “hot” and makes a kind of fizzing or crackling sensation. It’s difficult to describe, but quite unpleasant as it feels like I’m having a minor brain seizure or stroke or something…
Right! I would describe the sensation definitely within the PAIN range. While unpleasant, that’s quite an understatement to me.
But yes, I think we’re all experiencing to same thing to some degree. I think it’s most certainly nerve related. It first happened to me when I was in the 2nd grade. I’m now 34… so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.
I know what it is! I used to get it a lot when dancing not warmed up properly. I always thought it was - somehow the muscles get twiste improperly and put weight on the nerve or something.
I get that sometimes. It feels like something “catches” in my neck and snaps, then there’s a rush of warmth and a rushing feeling like fluid. I was convinced as a kid that I was breaking my neck and bleeding internally.
When I was younger (much younger), I was working under my car and experienced that “hot flash.” I think it was caused by nerves crossing each other causing a short circuit. Have not had that happen in later life though, probably because I don’t work on my own car any more.
I’ve had the exact same thing . . . it all occurred when I was an adolescent when I’d twist my neck abruptly, but it hasn’t happened since I was 12 or so. This is the first time I’ve ever read about anyone else experiencing this, I’d love to know what it was once and for all.
That might explain why I haven’t been getting periods lately. And when I say lately, I mean never. And when I say never, I mean I was born without a vagina… God, I feel so hideously disfigured.
Hot neck! I used to get them periodically, and so did my mom and sister. I haven’t, in a long time, although now I probably will, since I said that. Hot neck hurts.
Oooh, I get that too! Mainly when I turn my head too fast, although I get it more to the side - it feels like I dislocated my inner ear. Definately painful, and I never ever thought to ask anyone whether they get the same thing. Gotta love The Dope!
It’s funny, because I never really thought to share my experiences with anyone IRL either. I’ll bet it’s pretty common amongst people, although I’ve never heard of anyone speak of it.
I get the neck sprong occasionally. A few months ago I was at the dentist getting a root canal. He was shoving a needle around in my jaw squirting lidocaine when I had a jaw sprong like an electric shock. I twitched, and my jaw was numb, instantly. My dentist commented that he must have hit the nerve.
