And in your experience, are these numpad-less laptops common? The majority of Thinkpads, even, had them until these recent models with the chiclet keyboards.
Couple that with the fact that most computer questions asked on the SDMB are from people with limited technical know-how – we had no way of knowing you were an expert – and we just offered the most straightforward guess. If you had said something like “This laptop has no numpad, not even the embedded one that most laptops have”, it would’ve made more sense right off the bat.
You had a bad weekend? Well, I’m sorry, but if you think you’re a hero because you managed to ask a question without swearing at people completely unrelated to it…
Yeah, that’s probably not what you wanted either, but I thought I’d point it out.
It sounds like Lenovo did not think things through when they created their new keyboard. I know a lot of other programs that assume you have a keypad. I second the recommendation for keytweak, BTW.
Which would be why I said it had no numpad at all.

You mean like this?
You’ll note there was no snark up to this point, even though I’ve repeated myself four times. And yes, the two times I repeated myself after that I was a bit cranky, but seriously!
Actually I wasn’t going to swear at people; that would be inappropriate. I was going to use profanity as an intensifier (in other words ‘okay guys, honestly there is no damn numpad’) And I’d hardly call you people inappropriate - you were the ones assuming I was unable to read a keyboard (‘hmmm… there is no button labeled NumLock… in any color. Gee, I wonder.’ Really? I really had to say that SIX TIMES?). Even if I didn’t know how to use an embedded keypad - which wasn’t the issue, the issue was that there is NumLock - I’d still be able to SEE it. I realize there are people who seem too stupid to remember to breathe, but have I ever, in my years on the Dope, come across that way?
I know, but I didn’t really want to bother considering I don’t need it that often and I already have a keyboard from my old computer… well and half the time I’m using the laptop on my lap.
I am only curious about one thing. If you are as good as you say, why did you buy this laptop? What makes it so much better that it compensates for that serious ( IMO ) basic lack of usability?
I hardly ever use the number pad - I’m not a gamer and I don’t do a lot data entry. I bought it because I needed a laptop to replace my PC. If I start needing one, I’ll buy one the USB ones. I didn’t say I was good, just experienced and capable of reading, but I do most of my input with either the mouse or Wacom tablet.
