Expensive red peppers

Why do red peppers cost more than green peppers? Are they more expensive to grow?

Sort of. Most red peppers are just riper green peppers. This additional time on the plant costs money, and every week ripening is another week at risk from sun, insects, flood, blight, etc.

They’re just varieties, like yellow and red cherries etc. In Europe they sell for the same price. You can mix them in your shopping bag.

No, this isn’t really true; green peppers are immature; certainly they might be a variety that is selected for some kind of desirable attributes when picked at that stage, but green peppers are simply not fully ripe.
