I am still having trouble with my milk supply. I have tried everything, including herbs, lactation consultants, pumps, etc etc. I am thinking about calling the doctor tomorrow and asking for a script for a galactogogue. Anyone here have any experience with Reglan, domperadone, etc? If so, how did it work for you? Can you even get domperadone in the US now?
[hijack]This is a new vocabulary word for me. I had thought it meant someone who wants to rule the galaxy![/hijack]
You can get domperidone. Try going to the message boards at breastfeeding.com and searching for “domperidone” under Pumping and Working or General Breastfeeding topics. You should find some links to companies that will ship it to you in the US. I ordered some about 6 months ago with no problem. I recently ran out and have been using fenugreek instead, but I had MUCH fewer side effects with the domperidone. I have heard some negative things about Reglan, mainly about the risks of depression, but it would be much easier and quicker to procure than domperidone.
Good luck.
I would recommend discussing all your options with your Doctor before asking for a particular prescription. Mrs. Magill started to run dry when Fang was about three to four months. It turned out that she just was not drinking enough water.
I have seen 3 lactation consultants, multiple LLL members, taken herbs, gotten hospital grade pumps, talked to the pediatrician, etc etc etc. I also have an issue with my thalamus (caused by a medication I took years ago) where I constantly feel thirsty, even though I’m really not, biologically. I drink around a gallon of water a day. Water is not the issue.
Thanks, though. All ideas are helpful.
OK, this is probably not what you’re looking for, but my MIL’s Dr. back in the late 60s told her to drink Guinness (couple of pints a day, at least) when she was having trouble keeping up with her twins’ demand.
I tried that too. I didn’t bring it up because it can be flame-bait (“You drink while breastfeeding?! That’s abuse! Won’t someone think of the children?!”).
I also tried rum. It was tastier, but didn’t really help (well, it didn’t help the milk issue, but I sure felt good!).
Perhaps tequila?*
*I am kidding. I know it’s the hops/ darkness of the beer that makes this work. But today tequila just sounds good.
I Like An Arky’s suggestion. Seriously, is there nothing a pint of Guiness can’t cure?
Stupid Lent.
On reflection, I should probably insert a disclaimer about me not being a Dr., for one, and also to clarify that one shouldn’t drink to excess while breastfeedng… so keep it under 4 pints a day, inkleberry.
I try, but gosh the tequila is just so good with my morning eggs!*
*I’m seriously joking. I’ve had 3 drinks since my baby was born. Now alcohol makes me feel ill. It is very sad.
