Experienced runners: Advise me, please!

I was going to ask this in the C25K thread but decided it was too much of a hijack.

I finished the C25K program and ran a 5K on Thanksgiving Day. My time was nothing to write home about, so that’s one thing I’d like to work on.

I have about a month left of running, and then I will have major abdominal surgery on Jan. 4.

I’d eventually like to work up to running 5-6 days a week. I’d like to increase my distance so I can do 10Ks and improve my pace so it won’t take me an hour and a half to complete one!

So how should I be training up until the time I have surgery? And how should I approach getting back to running after surgery?

Up to surgery, do as you’ve been doing, you won’t gain a whole lot of fitness in the time left.

How major is the surgery and how much time do you anticipate before you will be cleared to run again?

You will regain lost fitness faster than it took to gain the first time around.

You may have to go all the way back to the start of C25K at first to gauge where you are.

Major surgery = total abdominal hysterectomy w/ a big honkin’ vertical incision, not the nice little bikini line one. I’ll ask him about returning to running when I have my pre-op appt. on the 20th. (I had talked with him earlier about returning to work, but not running.)

I would say to not even worry about running until you’re cleared.

From the Mayo Clinic.

I would expect a restriction on athletic activity will have similar if not a longer time span.
