The aircraft in question had an “experimental” sticker on it, although it is a Piper Cherokee 180. Does anyone know why it’s “experimental”? Testing a different engine or something?

It might have been the ‘Cool Jugs’ plane.
Do you have the N number avaialable? If so, try looking in the FAA database for it.

Don’t have the tail number. I didn’t think to notice it this morning.
Link didnt work - nevermind
If anything was added that wasn’t STC’d then it loses its certified status and becomes experimental.

The “experimental” sticker on the photo is in the same position as on the airplane, but that’s all I can tell.
Dr. Lao: Yes, but the news didn’s say what made it experimental; they just called it “an experimental airplane”. (If I were the talking head, I would have called it a “modified Piper Cherokee 180”.)
ChalkPit may be right. The thing was pouring oil from inder the cowl.
Well, I don’t see any pictures on your link, but it literally could be just about anything that made it experimental. And without a look at the engine and airframe logs it is not likely you’ll be able to tell what was modified.
This isn’t quite correct. You can add things to aircraft without a STC in the vast majority of cases.
Nothing becomes an experimental automatically. An experimental airworthiness certificate has to be applied for. If it no longer complies with its type certificate its unairworthy, not experimental.
No, you didn’t ;).
(If I screw this up now, I’m gonna feel like a total idiot!) [url=“http://www.liquidcooledairpower.com/pictures/cherokee-conversion/Engine-Installation/lores/118-1860_IMG.jpg”]Here it is](http://www.liquidcooledairpower.com/pictures/cherokee-conversion/Engine-Installation/lores/118-1860_IMG.jpg)
