I was approaching the toll booth of the bridge into Manhattan. Just before I get there two cops cars park across the road way with their lights on blocking me. But across the divider the road is not blocked and cars are going through. I am the only car there at that moment. One of the cops is staring right at me for about 30 seconds and at first I think I am getting arrested. I’m sure I wasn’t speeding so I am thinking maybe they are looking for a grey Altima. But that’s not it, soon other cars show up and block the other side. Now I am wondering if something happened in Manhattan and they are preventing people from coming in. They stay there for about 10 minutes and then two other cars show up on my side of the divider and they start to drive across the bridge, side by side in four lanes with their lights on, leading me and the rest of the cars behind me across the bridge.
Since I am talking about the GWB, every time I approach it I say “Take me to the middle of the George Washington bridge!”
It’s a good place to arrest someone who is a worrisome flight risk, actually. One took place about 5 car-lengths in front of me. Let’s call the car in question “Perpmobile”. OK, unmarked police cars maneuvered to be directly or nearly-directly in front of Perpmobile, and also on either side of it, then they all hit their brakes in synch, bringin all traffic to a standstill. Police leap out onto their toes, pistols in hand, surrounding the Perpmobile. If the driver (or passenger/s) had tried to run for it, well, they’re up in the air on a bridge, way too high to jump. Police flashy lights on blocking all traffic. A few minutes later we get waved on through.
Here is the Twitter account for the bridge authority. You didn’t say which day this occurred, but the tweets mention delays over several days due to construction.
that’s gotta be it. Maybe they were working 10 minutes at a time all day long.
I recommend checking local radio or TV traffic reports or the Twitter feeds for the local police/sheriff/state police/highway patrol right after such things. I’ve found sometimes they’ll mention something to explain the delay or police activity I saw.
I can’t be the only one who’s looking forward to the zombie post, six years from now, “Did you make it through?”
