Explain to me how you get into a landing gear in the first place

OK, every once in a while we hear about a frozen idiot who dies in the wheel-well of an aircraft. They are stupid to begin with, but smart enough to actually get in there. How exactly do they do it?

The latest, btw:

When the plane is parked on the ground, climb up into the wheel well.
Some problems with this however
[ul]
[li]The wheel well is just as large as the assembly (landing gear) that fits into it. You may run out of room and get crushed when the gear is retracted.[/li][li]The gear well is not pressurized. The air at 39,000 feet is to thin to support life.[/li][li]the temp up there is about -40. Guy from Jamacia probably isn’t dressed for this weather.[/li][/ul]

Rick,

Excellent analysis, but add one more drawback:

You may have fallen asleep, or for some other reason not realize when the pilot is about to lower the gear. Then of course you would fall out as the gear extends. But of course if you were frozen from the low temperatures, or unconcious from hypoxia, your impact with the ground would be painless.

Best,

Sky

**Sky you are 100% correct of course. But after the three things I listed, I didn’t think #4 would matter much

I don’t understand how they could get out the aircraft to begin with. Certainly indicates a major security hole to me.

Well, I’m just speculating here, but he was probably wearing the clothes of a grounds crew member, maintenance worker, or some other uniform that would allow him to fit in.

I imagine the security at that Jamaican airport isn’t as tight as it is here, stateside.
