Howdy. Through my points on a credit card, I could get a free ipod Touch, and I must say I do find myself all lusty about the the possibility.
But the Apple genius explained to me that iPod Touch is ONLY “WiFi-Capable” - it cannot use my existing data-only AT&T account, because it doesn’t have the internal phone-stuff to connect to that account. That part I get… my data-only account that I use with my Treo is actually a kind of phone connection.
But as for the Wifi… is my wireless network inside my house “wifi”? For some reason I’ve always gotten the impression that “Wifi” means some kind of open, public wireless network, like Starbucks or something. Or is it really just ANY wireless network?
Yes you can connect to inside your house that is WiFi, there is “free” or “public” WiFi that anyone can connect to but its still the same. Your house is Wi Fi just not (i hope) public. FTR Starbucks isnt free.
Sounds like the person at Apple wanted you to be crystal clear on the difference between the iPod Touch and the iPhone. The iPhone has both wi-fi and cell phone data/voice access through ATT; the iPod Touch has only wi-fi and absolutely no capabilities for accessing any kind of cellular network.
Wi-fi is just a term used for a wireless network of some kind. Your home, office, Starbucks, etc. are all wireless networks. Some free, some for-pay, and all hopefully at least password protected. If you’re in range of an access point, and (assuming it’s properly protected) you have a password for it, you can access web pages and other stuff. If you’re not in range, you won’t have 'net access.
