Explain your user name

I tend to take handles from favorite books, and I’d just finished reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson (absolutely amazing book, btw). It’s all about cryptography, aka inventing and breaking codes. A “keystream” is the sequence of numbers you use to encode or decode your message. I thought it sounded cool. It’s my AIM name, too. I’m on AOL (see below) but I only use keystream on AIM to talk to people.

My email address is chrrome@aol.com, because I’m a huge William Gibson fan (he’s a cyberpunk writer) and he’s obssessed with chrome as a symbol for technology. And “chrome” was already taken on AOL. I did meet the actual chrome@aol.com one day. Feaked me out. Incidentally, I have “chrrome” sewn up on hotmail and yahoo, too.

Oh, alright. I’ve been avoiding these threads, but since nobody reads Shakespeare any more, and some posters think I’m a man: Sycorax is a witch and mother of Caliban in The Tempest.

It’s my nephew’s nickname for me. I dunno where he got it.

Honestly, it’s been so long I don’t truly remember. I think that I just wanted something with Max in it, and Torque seemed like a good last name. It seemed like something that fit well together, sounded cool, yet was still a somewhat plausible name.

I’ve been using it since 1991, when I started calling BBSes. I still have friends who met me first as Max and call me Max to my face, despite knowing my real name.

“Tom of Finland” is the moniker associated with a series of homoerotic drawings by the artist Touko Laaksonen. Many of the drawings are VERY sexually graphic and the men in them all well-built with impossibly huge penises (I’m looking at one of the drawings now and judging by the height of one of the figures, I’d say his dick is about 2.5 feet long). The figures in the drawings are usually gay icons…construction workers, cops, leather-men, cowboys, etc., and the drawings are very well done, not to mention sexy as all get out. So anyway, I chose the name because I’m a huge fan.

Regards,
Tom

There was a boxer on an episode of The Simpsons named Drederick Tatum, and Mr. Armageddon was his nickname. I liked it, and it goes well with another online nickname I have (Randall Flagg). I think that one’s self-explanatory, though.

Hey Squee, go to www.pigstompers.com and you will see your name being used, and used, and used…

I think my name is self-explanitory, but it stems from a tragic addiction to the evil Mt. Dew. I’ve been struggling with it since I was about 12 and, unfortunately, there are no support groups for people with this horrible affliction. (read: sarcasm).

My favorite rock, which is named after it’s type locality–my favorite little remote island in the middle of Mediterranean. Great geology; fantastic food.

(In ye olde Dallas BBS days, I called myself “Yossarian”.)

I love animals, and this happens to be my favorite animal.

P.S. Sylence, I think you got the best of the 4 names.

Mom always said there’d be days like this…she just never said there’d be so MANY of them!!!

I hope I don’t have to explain my nick…

It’s the name that was assigned to me in Chinese class. It means John, which, coincidentally is my real name.

Manny of you have heard this before, but here’s something new: I found out what it means- A written document.

Kinda depressing, really.

-John

Miskch’s Law- It’s better to have a horrible ending than horrors without end.

Mine’s fairly simple…a falcon is my spirit animal. Boring, huh? (And Max? I understand about people calling you by your online name…I go by Hawk sometimes on IRC, and I have people that call me that, even though they know my real name.)
