Exterior Painting Question: Topcoat times

I’m wondering what the consensus wisdom on this is.

Today I painted the front door. Due to a miscommunication, I painted the door and the trim (which is substantial, as the door has full sidelites left and right). Using the color Mrs. Olds picked, pretty early into the job and thought “Man, that’s awfully dark.” BUT, I learned long ago that in these matters mine is not to question.

Well, it turns out she had wanted to leave the trim the old off white color and only the door was to be slate. I’ll not bore you with the details of the argument in which I deftly proved my point that she was not clear, and she ultimately conceded as much. Since she is not a participant on this message board, that’s my story.

Anyway, given the very dark nature of this paint, I think my best bet is to hit the trim with a coat of Killz before I restore the color.

The exterior latex says it may be topcoated in 4 hours. Does anyone see a problem with that if the topcoat happens to be Killz? I know an exterior paint isn’t fully dry for some time.

If I do this first thing tomorrow am, as I wish, it will have been about 16 hours.

Thanks for the advice

The problem with this question is it is absolutely among the most vague I’ve seen.

Re-coat times vary with product used, surface type and condition, temperature, humidity, and even sunlight/orientation.

And I know next to nothing about paint.

On the bright side, it is by now probably safe to apply whatever varient of Kilz you wish

You didn’t post a picture so it’s very difficult to find reasons to agree with Mrs. Olds, but I think in general terms you owe her an apology. It’s hard only at first, “Honey, you’re right and I’m wrong”, but after a few years it does get easier. There’s a couple more things I can’t have noticed is that it would have looked like you’re overworking the paint, just brush it on and be done with it. The other thing is to vacuum up as much cat hair as you can, latex paint especially attracts cat hair like a magnet. We would have seen this down at the bottom of the picture if you’d have posted one.

The answer to your question is “yes”, you should be able repaint the next day with more latex (or Kilts) without ill effect.

For clarity, paint typically dries within a day or less, and this is just the solvent evaporating away. However, paint takes a good long while to cure like weeks or even months. This process is the chemical reactions that make the paint coat hard and durable.
