Please excuse me if this question has been asked before, but I did a search and it did not allow usb because the search string was too short, and the search for mouse came up with a million results.
So the question is this…
I bought a new Dell notebook laptop, and there is a touchpad on it as a mouse.
So I attach an external, optical mouse to the USB port behind the laptop and when I boot up the notebook, the touchpad works but the external mouse does not…
I even tried installing the CD that came with the mouse, re-booted the laptop and it still won’t work.
I checked in Control Panel/Mouse and things seem to work properly, but such is not the case.
I’m in dire need of help… anyone kind enough to aid me?
I had a problem with a Dell Notebook. Two actually, one being that I could not get the mouse and touchpad to both work. Getting the extermal mouse to work disabled the keypad. No on at the Dell “help” line was even able to understand my complaint and therefore were not able to help. The other problem was with the keyboard repeat speed. I was trying to talk to them about registry keys and they kept jabbering about the control panel, taking cluelessness to new levels. Getting authorization to return it took endless hours on perma-hold, but that is likely your only choice. And oh yes, I wrote up my experiences and sent it to Dell. No reply.
Some questions: do you know if other USB devices work on that laptop? (If not, it could be a few things.) Do you have another computer to try the USB mouse with? (If you do, install the drivers, then plug in the mouse and see if it works.) That’ll help narrow down what may be going wrong.

The first rule of installing USB devices is to install the software before first plugging in the device. Always.
You may have some sort of generic USB driver installed by the OS (which for some inexplicable reason you have decided not to tell us about). It will continue to use that wrong driver until you remove it and start all over. It can be very difficult to fix this due to the stupidity of various software companies.
In future posts, please provide all basic info about the system and device used. Brands, version, etc.
Am I right in thinking that when USB was first launched, this was the other way around; I seem to remember it being promoted as plug>(perhaps)drivers>no reboot>play.
