Extranous u

What is the origin of the letter u being dropped from such words like color, harbor, humor and others? Is it simply one country not wanting to be like another country? A way of pinching pennies when it comes to ink? Economy in handwriting? Perhaps the letter u was rare in moveable type and it was dropped altogether?

Perhaps because we don’t use the Queens english?
