Ok, so everyone knows that your eyes can be damaged by trying to focus on things that are too close. However, what is the truth behind light level warnings?
For instance, how are your eyes strained when trying to read in “too little” light? How is it different than walking around in the dark, or regular reading?
How about a monitor in a dark room? Say, if I were reading The Straight Dope with the lights turned off, how would the area I was not looking directly at effect how the monitor effects my eyes? The monitor does not get brighter, and the total light decreases…
Also, just for extra points, is your retina damaged by regular light levels? To what extent?
While all the activities you describe above may cause some sensation of eye fatigue, none of them should damage the eyes at all. Including the old saw about going cross-eyed if you stare at things too close to you.
Ok, so UV can hurt you eyes, but if it is just the visual range in quantities as low or lower than sunlight it is harmless?
Eye fatigue can tire my eyes, but that is just the muscles right? How much can you exercise your eye muscles? If I focus on something close, then something far away, can I get buff eyes?
