I get occasionally get a plug of sebaceous material expressing itself (presumably) out of an eyelash pore. So far, they’ve always resolved on their own, and have never caused a problem. I’ve always referred to them as “sties.”
In a casual conversation with someone recently, this person mentioned that they didn’t think that was a sty, that a sty was an irritation in a eyelash pore. Sure enough, a cursory glace at Google images shows sties as being irritation sites.
The question: Would a non-irritating sebaceous plug be referred to as a sty in medical terms? If not, is there a different term for it?
