I have a very fair complexion, blond hair. My eyes are light-colored and only really “pop” if I wear eyeliner and mascara, which I do every day.
A friend of a friend got tattoo eyeliner done a while back and really likes it, but she’s got very dark features. I’m afraid if I get it done, it’ll look too harsh. But the idea of never having to do my eye makeup again is really tempting. I just turned 30 and I’m thinking of buying it for myself as a birthday prezzie.
I’m an asian guy. I dated an Asian girl who had it done. She was not light for an Asian girl, but not dark either. Standard “yellow” I guess.
She liked it. So did I. I don’t think she put on much make eye make up most days(other makeup sometimes), but when she went out she still did it.
From my standpoint it was also nice at night, or after a shower as it always gave her a little pop.
Is there a way to try a colored henna tattoo there? I believe those are non-permanent.
edit: She had a fairly light color. It was like a kind of teal. It didn’t particularly stand out. If she needed/wanted to, she applied make up over it.
I’d like to get that, but wouldn’t it be terrifying and painful to get your eyelids tattooed? I’m very fair complexioned too (although I have very dark hair and medium dark eyes) but I wouldn’t worry about it looking too harsh, I would just get a thin line. Then I’d still wear eyeliner over it if I wanted something bolder, but I don’t think that would happen too much.
My favorite eyeliner that I usually wear is a very dark purple that looks almost black, but not as harsh as black. It’s Urban Decay, Rockstar. I’d probably want a color like that.
I’ve only seen tattooed mascara done badly once, and that was because she had it done years ago in someone’s kitchen (it’s fading and not 100% straight). With a touch-up to even the lines, it’d be fine.
I don’t think it’s a bad idea, as long as you go with a reputable place and choose an artist based on a solid portfolio.
I think my main concern (besides EW EYE TATTOO PAINFUL!) would be what if fashions/styles change and you want your eye make up to look different? Though as Harmonix mentions, I guess you could just put eye make up over it?
I think a thin dark line would be safe as far as fashion changing. I would love to do that because I hate how eye makeup gets smudged by the end of the day if you’re not super careful not to get anything anywhere near your eyes, and I never even TRY to line my lower lid because that will stay on for about 2 seconds.
But I just did a little googling and all the places I found charge about $450-650! I thought it would be pretty cheap like a tiny, very simple tattoo generally would be. There’s one place that charges $225 which I could maybe see spending, but I wonder if there’s a good or bad reason they charge so much less than everyone else.
It’s a high-stakes tattoo. If they screw it up, there’s no covering it with long sleeves or tall socks.
Also, do you want a bargain tattoo artist working on your eyelids with needles?
I’ve thought about it. Due to a condition I have, I have no eyelashes or eyebrows. I get tired of drawing everything in. I have heard that they are not really permanent. You have to get it redone every few years.
A girl who works at my vet’s office appears to have alopecia. She doesn’t bother with a wig, but usually sports flashy earrings, and her permanent eyeliner, brows, and lips are flattering. She’s very fair, and I wonder if she might have chosen lighter shades because she looks done up for a date instead of a work day, bit the overall look is pretty and feminine.
Thanks guys! I’m happy to hear some positive feedback.
The friend of friend who got it done said the eyelids weren’t painful at all, but the eyebrows were awful. Since I probably wouldn’t get my eyebrows done, I took this to mean that the pain would be very do-able, even for a wuss like myself
As far as the effects of aging go, I had a friend who was in her 60s and had had the eyeliner for over 20 years and it looked great. I had no idea it was tatooed until she told me. She also had very faint lip liner.
My eyebrows stop half way I’d like to get them done too, but I’ve seen so many horror eyebrows it puts me off. Of course going to a good tatooist and choosing exactly what you want is the key. If I do have it done I’d get someone else to line them out a few times first so I could choose. I don’t always wear make up but one time I lined them in for work and the boss asked me very discreetly if I’d had a face lift!
There is a variety of shades available, so a fair complexion should not be the deal-breaker. I worked for a company that manufactured “ink” for this procedure at one time; it was pure iron oxide (cosmetic grade) in a base of glycerin and water. Iron oxide pigments can be made in shades from red and yellow through brown to black, and they mimic the range of skin tones very well. By using these materials, the risk of allergic reaction was greatly reduced.
It’s my understanding that for eyebrows, the ink is semi-permanent and never intended to last a lifetime. I was considering filling in one eyebrow over a scar and was concerned what the tat would look like if/when my eyebrows turned gray. It would be awful to have a dark brown patch in the middle of gray eyebrows. I don’t think the ink used for the eyelids is semi-permanent but you can ask when you select your artist.
I think it looks very good on younger to middle aged faces, but whoa, 50 years down that road is harsh. I’ve seen several elderly ladies with it and it looks like someone took a big magic marker to their face. The eyeliner circles the eye instead of lining lashes. Lipliner looks like odd color crayola. Eyebrows too dark and large for their coloring. Maybe 50 years ago the equipment and skills were nowhere near today’s standards.
What if you want a face lift later on?
I like the idea of the ink fading over 5 years, then you could have it redone to suit yourself. I would need a rock solid guarantee, though.
I had it done and I love it.
My cousin was learning so I got a discount, $250 for the upper lids and $180 for the lowers.
I was talked into a darker shade than I wanted, but now I wish I had gone darker. Listen to the artist, they know what they are talking about.
It hurts but it’s not unbearable. I’m a big wussie and if I could stand it anybody can. It mostly feels like your eyelashes are being plucked out. My cousin said some women actually fall asleep.
The lower lids are supposed to be less painful, but I thought they hurt worse and you can see what is going on. It is a shorter line though so it’s over quicker.
