I was in the US Army, did OK, got my honorable discharge. I got a job in private industry working on - wait for it - military projects. Then I went into government, in quality engineering and software, making sure these same weapons systems and platforms will perform as promised.

True story: I am white and was raised in a very racist family in the Capital of the Confederacy. Similar to Sherrod, we had the added bonus of being legitimately harmed by a black man to help reinforce our prejudice. I had a truck and a confederat flag in the back. I would drive through black parts of town yelling at “nigger” at the blacks. Thanks God I was never shot. I only wish I could go back on my knees and apologize to those people.
Fast forward - I was fortunate to be exposed to some great people who pierced my prejudices. I have literally faced down David Duke over my black girlfriend and now my friends include a beautiful array of colors from all over the world. I work for justice daily now.
