Face Off, Season 4 (SyFy Series)

Last season they eliminated ‘hat dude’ just prior to teh finale - for much the same type of reasoning -

IF, as we are speculating here, Eric F could not obtain a passport - then the prize of being able to go to France, etc - would not be able to be won by him anyway - so, something happened here that is not being spoken about on air that helped in his elimination -

Then why would he have been on the show in the first place?

It may not have been something they ‘realied’ early on - I have no idea how far out they plan/think things - just a thought based on our speculation wrt Canada trip.

Maybe the entire country of Canada has a restraining order on him. He probably badmouthed maple syrup and hockey while making fun of their pronunciation of ‘about’.

Or we wouldn’t let him back in …

I wonder if his passport status (assumed) only became an issue when it was apparent he had a true chance at winning?

It cannot be a coincidence that he ‘lost’ the same week as the ‘family thing’, etc, possible even that they coordinated his getting to pick last (and not get his mutant preference) as a way to amp his ‘lack of enthusiasm’ at the particular project on his way to losing the challenge and being sent home.

Either way - willing to bet he already has job opportunities lined up based on the appearance - no doubt he has the talent to work in the industry.

Meh, everybody is going to have projects where they are less than enthused, especially at the lower rungs of work where you work on a team for somebody else. Eric could have taken the opportunity to shine. Pick whatever out of what was left, even if it wasn’t his desired Mutant and even if it meant using a furry critter, and then knock it out of the park to show his professionalism and ability to take on challenges. Plus, really deliver on the realism angle that Glenn focused on last week.

Like Ve said, the Mutant was almost a cheat. Plus, for Eric, it would have pulled him toward his regular aesthetic that Glenn was already harping on. So it was an opportunity to do something different and show versatility, but he didn’t embrace it.

The show, as presented, does a good job of focusing on ability, and rating largely on the episode shown. There does have to be some amount of prior work in the judges’ evaluations, simply because they are casting their own opinions.

I don’t think ability to make use of the prizes was a factor. If he wins, he doesn’t get to go to France, but he could still get the cash and the car, and the kudos to his career resume that winning brings.

Not that I think not winning will hurt his career opportunities. He has done well on the show, shown he has big ideas and skills to largely pull them off. He’s worked well with different people. He struggled a bit keeping his scope of work within the schedule alotted, but still pulled most of it off reasonably well. His reputation from the show is pretty good, vs someone like Autumn, where the show mostly highlighted her lack of polish, weak skillset, and inability to judge her own performance realistically.

So I just watched the season finale.

Great episode. Of course we knew the challenge involved a water stunt show, but it was still interesting. Pairing up the teams, Anthony looked like he was hamstrung with Autumn.

Lots of challenges in sculpting and building. Lots of last minute panics.

For the final products,

Kris had an ethereal water spirits team. I didn’t care for the female, the texture was off and the paint patterning with the yellows and oranges was splotchy and meh. But the silver dude was awesome. And I mean just literally awe inspiring. The shapes were great, the blue highlighting worked with the reflective silver, the shape of the head and back stunning. A-ma-zing.

Anthony had sinister and went with an alien look. His duo really looked like a matched set, with a softer rounded female form and angular harsh male. He might could have done something a little more vibrant in color somewhere, but the shape of the heads were great, and the painting detailed and really fit the characters.

Wayne came in with supernatural, and created an angel form female growing wings with a male demon form with horns and such. Wayne did have some impressive, original shapes to his sculpts. Not only the face pieces being new and different, but the shape on the chest was very creative, different, and detailed. Once again he was rushing to get the paint done at the last minute. He did manage to get some coole veining in the paint job when up close gave it a more completed look than it otherwise had. Overall both of his felt washed out. I think he intended to paint the bones on the chest as well, but that didn’t happen. I think paint could have brought out the amazing texture of the wings and chest more. As it was, it was difficult to tell what the wings were.

Anyway, the judges had great commentary and insight. All teams succeeded in making great make ups that stayed waterproof and did not have any rips, tears, or separations even though the acrobatics was intense with 30 ft drops into water. Kudos on that.

And the winner is…

Anthony! Hurray, despite a few rough patches he pulled through, even with a bit of bad luck with his molding requiring him to resculpt the female face piece, and despite Autumn being one of his team members, he still had the most integrated set IMO, and the judges rewarded him with the win.

Good summary. I think that if that damned Wayne had finished his damn paintjob that he could have had a good chance of winning. If he’d continued the horn theme that the judges so loved down in the chest and wings area, he could have done it.

Overall, loved it. Really enjoyed it.

I think that, once again, the actors behind the makeup really sold the concept to the judges. The Sinister pair had it going perfectly, and gave Anthony that boost.

Great season. Can’t wait for next year!

Great finale!

Kris’s silver guy was the best individual character, no question! It was amazing, and looked great up close as well as during the performance. I cannot figure out why he went with such a weird color for the female character. Wouldn’t gold be the obvious choice to pair with silver? I can’t remember what the demon was trying to steal from the other character, though, so it feels like it didn’t really come through in the design.

Wayne was killing me when yet again, he didn’t have enough time for painting. I liked his ideas, but seriously, he deserved to lose for getting all the way to the finale, having two other people working with him, and STILL screwing up the time management. Overall though, I think he is usually the best conceptual designer on the show. I liked the idea of his demon trying to steal wings (as the judges obviously did), but that was a hard thing to pick when the water environment is so limiting.

I thought Anthony’s characters were terrific all around, and truly worked the best as a pair, which I think was fundamental for the assignment (and Kris’s biggest problem). Sometimes, even when Anthony has done well and been in top looks, I have found his designs a little bland. This week, I am glad I thought the characters were really great.

Okay, we are probably bad, cold-hearted people, but we spent the first 15 minutes laughing at the emotion with which the contestants talked to their families. Um, you’re adults and you’re on a reality TV show related to your choice of profession. I am assuming you use phones and skype to talk to your families frequently. You’re not deployed in a covert operation in Afghanistan, for heaven’s sake!

(we cut the guy with kids a little slack, because if the kids are upset about the separation, that is genuinely emotional.)

I sincerely hope that was staged for the cameras.

I agree it was close with Wayne vs Anthony. I think Kris had an awesome design in the Silver dude, but the texture and paint quality on the yellow/orange chick weren’t working for me. Of course those were finished by House.

Like I said, the paint on Wayne’s looked like it was missing something, and he said he intended to do the horns on the chest, too. If he’d gotten his painting more complete and made those sculpt elements stand out better, he might have won. His duo were pretty integrated as well, the judges felt.

I’m impressed everybody’s makeup held up to the rigors and the water. We’ve seen failures in that category before (like the infamous turtle from season 2 or the wear damage from season 2 finale).
