Face Off season 7

They could have saved the boxing gloves by working the wrist/sleeves part better - then it was ‘nurles’ on the end of branches.

I’m very pro-Team Dina but I’ve been concerned about her results recently - hoping this isn’t a sign she’ll be going home soon.

Yeah, I don’t get the missing branches. If the model just chucked them, then how is it the designer’s fault? If they just got shed on their own on the way from last looks, then it’s another story. But it’s a story we apparently didn’t get to hear. It would have actually been pretty cool to see the model staggering into walls and branches shedding right and left.

The bright green looked terrible and I thought the paint job, in general, was quite bad. The slugs, on the other hand, were sort of realistic. If you’ve ever cut into rotten maple, you’ll see these disgusting slug-like larvae burrowed into the wood. But that didn’t make up for the rest of the disaster. This one was actually my bottom look for the week.
I thought the sequoia head was actually OK, but I agree that the bottom part looked like someone’s halloween costume. And I don’t think they did an adequate job portraying rot – they should have had half the face crumbling into dust. So not great, just not as bad as the willow. Still, when push came to shove, it was no surprise who got shoved.
Dina, after doing very well in week 1, continues to disappoint.
I thought everyone did better in the superhero challenge. In fact, some of them did better in two hours than they did in three days of the featured challenge.

Well, without knowing more, it’s hard to say what happened. One of the guys comments that apparently the model had a last minute weight issue, but we don’t really know if that’s correct, or how he knew that. Did he get to talk to her? Or was he just guessing from comments made during last looks that we didn’t see? It’s frustrating as hell that we don’t have more information on what happened. All we saw was them scrambling to get the branches on in last looks and they were all in place, then the model walking out for reveal and no branches. I was almost thinking I was looking at a different result.

But how was it the designers’ fault? Well, if it was a weight issue, that is a design choice. The designer didn’t take that into account, or come up with a better support system (a harness instead of a belt that is binding or whatever).

But I have a lot of issue with the model shedding stuff on her own. I wouldn’t want to work with her again, certainly not without some conversation to understand what happened and why. It’s unprofessional.

I would LOVE to know what happened. I feel like in past seasons, there have sometimes been model issues that were explained so that we would know how the judges were factoring that in. There was one a while back where the model had an allergic reaction to the make up product, and the contestant had to scramble to slap the design on a brand new model, in obviously a very limited time. The show was pretty upfront about following this situation, so now I’m wondering if there was something about this tree branch situation – it was SO glossed over – that the show would rather NOT go into too much (like if it had the potential of making the show look unsafe or something like that).

Honestly, not hearing what actually happened with the model and the weight issues for the branches is virtually a deal-breaker for me as a fan of this show. The judges already have a once-a-season immunity, now the show is allowed to selectively reveal information (to us, and perhaps apparently to the judges).

I mean, the model was on the stage RIGHT THERE!!! Just ask her what happened! Quit beating around the bush and get the explanation. I can understand that it probably happened off-camera, but there’s no reason not to tell us what happened and why.

I don’t know… I’ve been feeling burned out on FaceOff for a couple of seasons now. There’s nothing new, and it seems like the quality of the participants has steadily gone down. Then we had arbitrary judging made even more arbitrary with a one-time immunity pass. Now we have our noses rubbed in the fact that the producers will show us and tell us only what they want to. It’s certainly not a competition anymore, that’s obvious.

Dammit. So I was recording Face Off and watching something on DVR, and my program on DVR finished and cut off, and what popped up on my screen was the final reveal of the person going home. Gah! SPOILERS!

So I went in knowing that result. Oh well.

The challenge: take two different animals and mash them together into some new weird hybrid. Interesting. It does have the advantage of not being another demon challenge. It has the disadvantage of suggesting the use of fun fur. Wheeee.

It’s also an individual challenge, so it means a lot of work and a lot of characters to review.

Drew’s Red Fox/Squirrel Monkey wasn’t bad.

I’m really surprised Dina’s Red Fox/Prairie Dog wasn’t in bottom looks. The face alone is hideous. Then the fingernails on the hands, not good. Add in the fun fur pants.

Keaghlan’s Eurasian Lynx/Kinkajou had problems that were stated, I thought the nose could have been more kinkajou, and the eyes are not aimed at the same location, but it didn’t seem as bad to me as Dina’s.

Cig’s Armadillo/Alligator (Armagator) was impressive. I liked the sculpt and paint, it all worked well. My quibble is that with time to craft clothes that look like they were tailored for this creature would have been better, but working with what was available, I’ll give it a pass. I loved it.

Damien’s Tawny Owl/Coatamundi was pretty good. I would have thought a longer snout would have been more appropriate for the coatamundi, but the integration of fur and feathers was good. When the judges are impressed with his technique and he said it was his first time working with them, I figured that would get him the win.

George’s Armadillo/Alligator (Allidillo) was a struggle. The head sculpt is has good form, but the body suit didn’t look right (wrinkles) and they pointed out workmanship problems (visible glue).

Sasha’s Tawny Owl/Bobcat, I see why the judges liked this one. The head and face are a brilliant mashup of the two forms. And the body and feathers are good, too. And as Lois said, the leggings weren’t very noticable, the eye was drawn to the important parts. I thought they might give this one the win for best blending of the two forms.

Jason’s Red-tailed Hawk/Fennec Fox, I wondered about the face looking like bald skin. Neither the hawk nor the fox have a bare skin face. But it was safe, not a big enough disaster to get bottom looks.

Stella with her Kinkajou/Serval Wildcat was lost from the get go, and it shows. Can’t see either creature in the final result, the sculpt not only doesn’t look like either animal, but doesn’t look like anything that makes sense.

Doc with his Bald Eagle/Squirrel Monkey, yeah, everything the judges said. I did go look and apparently squirrel monkey faces are mostly skin for the black part (with whisps of white hair), so he had that, but the rest of the face being hairless and featherless didn’t work. And the feet - Foghorn Leghorn has more realistic feet. The head sculpt has lots of problems with texture and shape as well. The face almost looks like a burn victim. Bottom Look for sure, and can’t argue with his being selected to go home. I could see an argument for Stella, but I think this was actively worse.

Rachael’s Fennec Fox/Coatimundi, I thought this wasn’t that bad. I liked the forms for the head, definitely showing the longer nose for the coatimundi. The ears might could have been bigger - fennec foxes are known for their oversized ears. I suppose safe is fine, it isn’t quite up there with the three picked for top looks. I also noted it is the only one we didn’t see the judges reviewing up close. Not sure why, maybe they just edited that out for time since she was safe. (I saw that happen once last season as well.)

In the end, the win for Damien makes sense, and the loss for Doc makes sense.

I didn’t really care for any of the creatures. I only kind of liked the last two.

Of the high scores, I didn’t like Sasha’s bobcat/owl. I liked Damien’s owl/coatamundi except for the eyes. The rest of the face I went back and forth on, but settled on liking it. I liked the face, but not the rest of Cig’s armadillo/Alligator. The body and clothing weren’t bad, they just didn’t really add anything for me.

Of the low scores, I was OK with Doc’s eagle/monkey except for the feet. I know I’m the only one who feels this way, but I didn’t think it was the worse. That distinction goes to Stella’s kinkajou/wildcat. I thought it looked like a cheep costume. I thought that Keaghlan’s lynx/kinkajou was worse than Doc’s, but better than Stella’s.

For the most part, I agree with Irishman.

I did NOT like Doc’s results and couldn’t see either creature in it. Further, the feet were terrible and cartoon like. Granted, he couldn’t know until after he saw Sasha’s, but they have shown that minimal but excellent work is better than doing too much.

I also thought that any of them that took two mammals, or similarly related, were foolish. I figured Cig and George were doomed as well because it seemed as if trying to make pattern or fur differences to show the two different animals would be tough. However, those two did do well, so it can be done. Having said that, given that they could see glue and edges, I’m surprised George got safe but I did think Doc’s was worse.

We started watching as something to watch and I’m surprised at how into it my wife and I are now!

“Oh, that is a terrible seam.”
“I can’t believe they thought the judges wouldn’t notice that!”
“Whoa! Did Glenn smile?”

Even though I wasn’t overly nuts about the challenge (combine two animals! I don’t know, it seemed a little flat to me), this was one of the rare episodes where I agreed with the judges right down the line. I called both the winner and the person being sent home. (And I felt really badly for him, he seemed more emotional than the average losing contestant, but I also feel like he hasn’t been that strong from the get-go.)

I am starting to get a little bit of a Miranda thing from Sasha, how Miranda was always agonizing over how AWFUL her work was, and then when it was great and the judges loved it, she could do the whole “oh wow, you liked it!” fawning. With Miranda, I eventually found it very tiresome and disingenuous.

You’re okay with this? I grant you Stella’s isn’t much better, but at least her painting has definition.

I think George got safe because, while he had some craftsmanship issues, his overall concept was good and his sculpting and painting had a lot of careful detail.

It’s not great, and it looks 99% monkey, 1% eagle, but it doesn’t bother me that much, because while the paint job does just look like he has a dirty face, the face looks like an actual creature, and not someone in makeup or wearing a mask. In a lot of looks, even the top ones sometimes, you look at their face and it looks someone in a mask or behind makeup. The face on Doc’s Eagle/Monkey looks organic.

It doesn’t look organic, and it doesn’t look like a monkey, it looks like a burn victim.

Actually, for some reason, it keeps making me think of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

I’ll back you up on that opinion. Doc’s work was bad, undoubtedly, but it was not the worst. In an episode with stronger competition, I can see sending him home on this. But for this episode was terrible all the way around. I’m not even convinced Doc deserved to be in bottom looks when stacked up against all of the other submissions for this week’s episode.

His build was one of the few that had any kind of personality in the sculpt and costuming. You just look at it and know who that monkey/eagle is. Other costumes this week… you can’t even define what they are, let alone who. (And people like Stella muddied that up even more with a stupid backstory about two scavengers evolving together over time. Huh?)

I find myself losing interest in the series. This week, I basically fast forwarded from Mr. Westmore’s visit to the entrance of the models.

Thank you.

Yes, I didn’t really care for any of the looks either.

I didn’t really pay attention to the back stories, but yeah, that one didn’t make any sense.

You’re making animal hybrids, and you want it to make sense?

My wife and I are the opposite – they’ve finally got challenges that are different from just zombies, monsters, aliens, zombies, monsters, and, oh! something different, alien-monsters. Last season we found very boring. This season, at least, the challenges have been different and interesting.

Yeah, I’m funny that way.
