Face Off - SyFy Series, Season 2

Nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, goodbye!

I am so happy to see Jerry go home. While I thought Sue’s makeup was worse, she doesn’t have Jerry’s tendency to turn in mediocre work then act like it’s the Sistine Chapel, so past performance, and attitudes clearly got considered.

Also, when he argued with LaVar over his makeup - sure, dude, defend away, but don’t be all ‘I’m an iconoclast, so bite me!’

Some general comments on the makeups…

Yeah, Sue’s big, big mistake was not doing up the hands, though if I were to tweak her design, I’d also do something to mess with the body shape - a hump back, probably. The fun-fur robe was not a great choice, either. (She reminded me of Rev Bem from Andromeda, only…kind of halfassed.)

Jerry, aside from the criticisms the judges had, I think the way he did the mouth was a mistake. I don’t know if he was going for a ‘lamprey’ sort of look or something, but it didn’t work out at all, if so.

Ian, I’m wondering if the problems he had with molding his appliances helped him - given the general look, the tears, mismoldings, etc, and what he had to do to cover up may have helped.

RJ, I really like the head, but the forearms, I thought were botched…they looked like something he was wearing, not a part of him.

Tara…I’d really like to see what it would have looked like had she actually done it how she’d envisioned. Oh, well.

Good calls all around this week.

Jerry turned in another mediocre piece and went home as he he should have. His paint job was cartoony and silly. However, I do think he did right to defend his choice of color. It’s important to not let a client dictate important design choices to an artist. They hired you for a reason. Unfortunately for him, his choices sucked so he shouldn’t have argued at all, just explained himself. Tara gave up and the judges basically mercy killed her out of the competition. Sue, on the other hand, demonstrated that she just isn’t ready to go it alone yet. She needs some more time to get confidence in her work. She would do wonderfully on* a team* of designers or creature makers with strong direction. She just isn’t fully baked yet.

Sue or RJ should probably go home next. RJ’s piece was interesting and he got points from the jugdes, and myself for being ballsy enough to try something big. It didn’t work well though, and he needs to slow down and think a bit more about what he actually accomplish in the given time.

Race and Ian both did excellent work as usual. Race’s design skills are going to land him a job regardless of the outcome of this competition. Beki’s was lackluster as far as I’m concerned. It might have been the stage lighting but I couldn’t see what Glen was so impressed with. I think he just likes bio-mechanical things. Still, her work was technically good as usual, so she belongs in the running.

Overall, I thought this week was a huge improvement over the last two episodes.

Two were sent home during one episode last season, too.

Another great episode. I loved that they worked with Tatopolous as a client. He did a great job taking their reconceptions, and commenting usefully.

Jerry was such a flaming ass to Sue. Bad enough running her down to the others behind her back, that’s letting off steam, but to blurt it out in front of her like she wasn’t across the room? Which is a shame, because he gave great practical advice to Ian that
helped save his sculpt problems.

When Tara’s sculpts didn’t work, I knew she was a gonner. She had one great job the first one, but has been lackluster with several fails since. It was time. I was trying to figure who the second would be, but from comments during discussion I figured they were sending Jerry home. I think Sue’s was worse, and they didn’t hate his sculpt, but rather his color choice. But he’s had a number of design fails, so he’s just not delivering, despite his experience. He has some really great practical knowledge, but doesn’t execute well.

I think they called right on Ian. As hard as he is on himself, they loved the intricacy of the painting.

The judges mentioned that as well. There was no change to the profile, “that says monkey to me”.

He certainly used Jerry’s great advice on how to mask the tears, make it scars and damage. The damage was integrated into the character, and that certainly helped. It was the total integration that sold it.

Agreed. Too big, not consistent with the rest of the body. But he had working pinchers.

Yeah but I dont remeber them announcing it at the last second, I could be totally misremembering though :stuck_out_tongue:

I too was thinking lamprey when I saw Jerry’s work. In fact, this picture sprang to mind. I love Levar’s comment because I think it brought to focus that yes it is a makeup show, but at heart it is a MOVIE makeup show and as such there are certain expectations.

Ian’s looked like how I would picture a Morlok. If I ever make a new version of The Time Machine, I’m hiring him. But what was the thing with the model’s arm position. Was she covering her boobs (just painted), was it trying to stand like a bat or was it something in the arm/wing sculpting?

Sue should have gone home over Tara, but to be honest when they announced the bottom 3 I was happy any of them were going home.

It was close but I had to agree with the judges, that bottom lip on Tara’s was just horrible and extremely distracting.

But that was a bad decision based on the comfort of the model. For me that is slightly better than nothing on the hands. I agree it could go either way.

Yeah, its all a matter of what one is looking for, Sue’s concept was limited but at least it was well executed. Tara had a very good concept, actually, but very poor execution.

Yeah - Sue did what she wanted, she just wasn’t ambitious enough about that.

Tara didn’t do what she wanted, and, unlike Ian, didn’t do a good job of adapting to the problems that kept her from getting the look she actually wanted, to get a better look than ‘well, I didn’t actually finish’.

Didn’t one of the judges call sending Tara home a ‘mercy kill’?

I started watching Face Off a couple of weeks ago and only because the model for the mens’ Tin Woodsman was, in my opinion, very handsome and caught my attention as I was flipping through the channels. So, of course, I started watching it and I really like Face Off. The handsome male model, I believe his name is Tim, does make it more interesting though. But, that aside, I do think Beki did what she could to realize Sue’s vision, her vision just was not that good. It was sapposed to be a beautifully deadly creation and there was nothing beautiful about thier final creature. The face was especially scary. But Beki does have people skills that are, to say the least, lacking.

Got to totally agree with the judges again this week, except I would have sent Sue home instead of Beki, but then I would’ve axed her weeks ago, so what do I know :stuck_out_tongue:
I will miss Beki, she had a few cool points in her favor & I liked some of her work, whereas Sue has consistently failed to impress me.
I was glad to see RJ be one of the top picks again. This is the fourth week in a row. (& this after he got last choice!) I’m starting to think he has the potential to win this. (Plus I LOLed when the Bellhop put the bra on Vi’s head  )
I do think Race deserved to win this week. His character was hauntingly lovely. I can’t think of anyone else on the show put so much of their personal feeling into a character.
Only 2 more weeks to go!

Ice Cream Man?

Scared the SNOT out of me! Jeez, that was terrifying! ::shudder::

This was a very interesting week. The Tim Burton influence is the underlying goal which was commented on by the players - Its in taking something simple, making it memorable, and then giving it a subtle, dark twist.

Beki’s downfall was that she neglected the human aspect of the Baker. She concentrated on the prop too much, and didn’t give the detail to the character she was creating. Race’s did what he was supposed to do - focus on the character, but twist it subtly. Turning her into a cello was expected… turning her cello human is the Burton twist.

Personally, I liked the bellhop best, but that I think was more due to the personality of the actor rather than the (exquisite!) makeup. If the actor had played it stiff-as-a-board and sullen, it could have given a completely different reaction from the judges. The playfulness he showed really enhanced the makeup effects. Personally, I think Sue was saved because, once again, the asian actor did a bunch of stuff that enlivened the makeup. (I sure hope that guy gets a real role some day! He’s awesome!). If Sue had gotten tall-lanky-white-guy instead of RJ, or if she’d gotten Nordic-Girl, I think she’d have gone home.

LOVE this show! and I’m really disappointed there are only two episodes left!

Noooooo! Beki has more talent in her little toe than Sue does in her whole body. Sue’s character this week was nothing like Burtonesque.

I’m starting to fall in love with RJ a little.

Palo, if I wasn’t a married woman, I’d be right there with ya. In fact I think my husband is a little jealous.

I’m another big RJ fan who also loved his design this week. As a matter of fact, this was the best challenge they’ve done so far. Although Race really did nail it, I was sort of sad to see Beki go. Not least of all because I can’t stand Sue, but due to her truly being talented, just too full of herself. I’m rooting for RJ to take it all though.

I can’t disagree that Beki is more talented then Sue, but I really think the judges had no option. This is a make-up show not a show about making props. Beki completely screwed up this challenge, so much so that I simply cannot argue with the decision. She showed them absolutely nothing, in fact, the teeth, the one thing she did do (yes she did some painting and put on a wig and picked out some clothes, whoop-de-do) were absolutely horrible. Sue got lucky, because hers was bad as well, really bad, but in the end, but I gotta agree that Becky needed to go.

And I was really happy Rayce won, because I thought that cello player was just outstanding, one of, if not the best I had seen all season.

I agree that the right contestant won this week, but damn, how long do we have to put up with Sue and her weak work?

I didn’t actually have a problem with Beki being eliminated based on her work this week, I just think that Sue has the overall worst body of work this season. She can’t last much longer.

Unless someone makes a monumental mistake, Sue will be the next to go home.

The bellhop was my absolute favorite. Chest of drawers!

I liked the cello girl a lot. I think it would have been an even better sell to give her a chair. If she were sitting down she could have been cheek to cheek with cello’s face as she played. That really would have emphasized the, “so close, yet so far away” feeling of the work.

I disagree. The challenge was to create a Tim Burton character. Whose looked like a Burton character, Beki or Sue-Sue? At least its an option.
