So I’ve been hearing some buzz about this new Facebook craze and decided to give it a whirl. Questions arise, but I’ll start with just one.
When I select a movie, book, whatever that I like, my selections appear along the left column of my home (?) page.
But the icons that are displayed change every time I go to the page. I want to display a really cool image of, say, Neil Young, but I guess I can’t select what will be shown? Some of them are poorly lit or badly composed images, and some are not even of Neil (some chick standing near a brick wall, WTF?).
You select a facebook page dedicated to that particular movie or artist. It could just as well be a “Neil Young is such a girl amirite” facebook page, so check that out before you select that.
The picture that goes with it is essentially what that page has chosen for their profile picture, the same way you did. So no, you don’t have any control over what that displays.
It doesn’t really matter much. People might look there to see what music and films you like, but they will look at your pictures to get an idea of you. So the images they see for your “likes” will not really be seen as representative of you, if that makes sense? They are just associated pages. Like the profile pictures of your friends, in a way.
Nope. But note that a) noone care’s if you’re online or not - plenty of people have a second computer that’s always logged in, a cell phone with the Facebook Messaging app, etc. that seeing a green dot there doesn’t meaningfully communicate that that person is paying attention and b) you can still message people who aren’t logged on - it just goes to their regular messages.
You can limit who can see you for chat to a specific group of friends, or exclude a specific group, but you can only see the status of the folks who can see your status. Look under Advanced Settings in the chat settings menu.
