Fuck Facebook Messenger for being a power draining annoying app. Fuck Facebook for not letting me view my messages unless I install this horrible app. The app drains power by constantly checking with my Facebook account and alerts me every few seconds to let me know that somewhere someone has done something on Facebook. WTF is wrong with Facebook? They’re like a once popular kid that now blackmails everyone into hanging out with him.
On my iPhone I’m able to control notifications.
Monetize. Monetize, monetize, monetize.
Turn off notifications. Access FB via your web browser on your phone. Check your messages via the browser as well, including filtered messages. I don’t have the app or Messenger, and I access everything on FB just fine except for “view your profile as X person.”
Notifications doesn’t control checking on FB for new messages, it just controls whether the app notifies you about them. The data fetch is what will eat up battery life.
If it is an iPhone you can turn off the Background App Refresh under the General settings menu. That along with turning off notifications can really help.
I’m sure the other devices have the same sort of setting.
Doobies sang that years ago
Mon-e-tize!
Mon-e-tize!
Dance to their mu-sic!
Bolding mine.
Pitting endorsed.
On mobile devices, it’s now impossible to avoid Messenger unless you are content with viewing Facebook as one would have viewed MySpace on a PSP circa 2006. Makes it hell to use more than one account, too.
“Install Messenger to view your messages” my Aunt Fanny.
This is exactly what I do on my Galaxy S3, but I think if you change your setting to Desktop View as well you should be able to view your profile as other people.
For a company so regarded as Facebook, I continue to be be shocked how poorly their app and Messenger perform versus other social apps in weak Wi_fi/Network settings.
I got a new phone last week and finally caved and got messenger, but you can easily get around that. As said above just remove messenger and the FB app and view in a browser. When you do want to use messenger switch to desktop view in the browser.
I’m really just here to endorse this pitting of this stupid app and to add that I don’t need people’s profile pics popping up all over my screen all day long.
There are plenty of third party Facebook “readers” which will allow you access messages. I caved because they don’t play nicely with syncing apps, though.
I use Disa, and it works fine with reading and responding to Facebook messages, without all the bloat.
I turned that shit off years ago. The sky opened and angels sang immediately afterward, and the people rejoiced. Also, the “Show Notifications” checkbox in the Apps settings (for Android) is phenomenal. The people rejoiced when I found that little nugget too.
My gripe is that somehow all my SMS texts were being duplicated in Messenger.
The only way I could figure out how to fix it was to uninstall Messenger than re install it.
There’s a setting in Messenger that excludes SMS texts. I just shut it off the other day when it finally bothered me enough.
I endorse this pitting, messenger is crap and without it I can’t PM folks from my phone.
if it wasn’t for all the baby goat videos I would give up facebook! fist
If you have a browser on your phone you can PM people via Facebook using it.
Yep. Like we said, just go to “desktop view” from your browser. It will be itty bitty but it will be there.
Disa, eh? I’m using Metal, which generally works but has some rather annoying bugs that I’d like to be free of. Just checked out Disa, which I rather like, but it’s just for messages.
Someone let me know when there’s a decent app to serve as an entire Facebook replacement! (Still using Metal for now.)
