Facebook is the worst. Thinking about getting rid of it

Oui da da!

Advertising-based “community” is always going to be awful, eventually.

Thanks to Facebook, I am told daily that:

  • Woke Disney is loosing the war against DeSantis and is probably going to fold soon.
  • Twitter and CNN+ are swirling the drain and the libs are freaking out.
  • There is no such thing as a trans person, just men and women, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron.
  • Electric cars and renewable energy are both idiotic and will never work, and libs are too dumb to see that.
  • Vaccines and masks are step one on the government’s plan to turn America into a fascist state.
  • Shooting people is the best way to ensure one’s safety
  • Joe Biden is the worst president ever. America was great until he became president, and now it’s all falling apart because of how dumb he is, and how much he hates America.

Facebook is, in my experience, a right-wing hate platform and insurrectionist recruitment tool. They are actively promoting an anti-gay, anti-trans, anti-woman, anti-black, anti-American, anti-compassion, pro-hate, violent right-wing agenda.

Facebook is to the SDMB as Spam is to Filet Mignon. You can’t express serious opinions or debate on Facebook. “Facebookers” go all a-flutter if you do anything traumatic.

Here’s how it works:

You: Look at me at my favorite (fill in the blank)!
Me: Aw, great! :like :love :care etc.

That’s it. That’s the depth of it. As the old song goes, “That’s all there is.” Instagram is just as bad or worse.

You: “Look, look, look at me!!”
Me: “Wow!”

Twitter? Don’t bother. Anyone habitually posting on Twitter already knows everything.

So, there are no liberal feeds that you could get, then? [Never used FB note]

I was seeing that, too, until I unfollowed my SO’s MAGAbot relatives. Any other MAGAbots I run across get blocked the moment I see 'em.

Probably. I mean, these are posts that are “suggested for me”, and I do have the option to “Hide post (see fewer posts like this)”.

My point is not that I couldn’t tell Facebook what ads I’d prefer to see, but rather that Facebook is happy to actively promote these messages for money. Facebook is working as a megaphone for “if they don’t have a penis/vagina, but think they are a man/woman, they’re just deluded and stupid.” In my mind that makes them a pretty shitty organization, even if I could turn off those advertisements on my feed.

(as an aside, I really don’t know how they decide what I want to look at . . . 99% of the folks on my feed run from apolitical to extreme left. Like, I get all the ridiculous left-wing memes because I have a few friends who share them, and then I get all the right-wing memes because Facebook feeds them to me)

As far as I know, Facebook only shows you two types of things. 1, paid-for ads, (these are clearly marked as “sponsored”) and 2, posts from accounts you’ve friended or followed. So, unless someone is paying to show you right-wing ads, you should prune you friends and following lists.

Facebook has learned that echo chambers do not drive engagement; angry argumentation drives engagement. They prioritize things that infuriate their users because it creates a compulsion to fight back. It’s perverse.

Five: posts from liked pages & posts from groups. 'Course, it’s safe to assume that @Eonwe has not liked any pages nor joined any groups which feature MAGAbot content.

The fifth is “suggested for you”, as mentioned.

There’s also the option to “Hide all from [page name]”, which will remove everything from that particular source. I had to do that on Trump’s Facebook campaign ads a couple of years ago.

I was lumping those in with friended or followed.

I’ve never seen that. I only use the phone app; maybe it doesn’t do those?

I just checked my Android phone; I see it on there and on my desktop.

I use iPhone, but thanks for checking the app. I guess my Facebook is broken, then.

I keep my FB friends list short, I have only 28 right now. 19 are family, the other 9 close friends. Any new friend requests gets my list of rules or you are gone. No politics, no harassment of any kind and keep your post light. I also follow about 20 groups, most are hobby stuff and a couple famous rock bands that have offered perks as a follower. I give the site about 10 minute max every morning unless I have something to post which is generally something I found to be funny.

Maybe you don’t have enough friends, shares, and/or liked pages.

I am currently on double-secret FB suspension for posting violently twice.

My first violent post was in response to a friend’s post, saying he would rather get punched in the face than get an injection. I offered to punch him in the face.
WARNED!!

The next day, today, I responded to a post condemning the Kent State shootings by paraphrasing Trump: Shoot the protestors!
SUSPENDED!!!

Bot has no sense of humor.

I think another one tried to get their hooks in me; this one only had a picture of a bunch of flowers on a white background associated with their profile so nothing that could be reverse searched.

I decided to delete the post that had been attracting 'em.

Not getting the hate. (shrug) I use it to keep up with friends and family. And it works great for that. I’m smart enough to know my preferences and privacy settings and keep them adjusted appropriately.

When an acquaintance starts spouting nonsense, I un-friend. That goes for family too.

Your freedom of speech isn’t protected there, but I don’t really care because I don’t use it to debate assholes (of which there are many).

When people tell they are going to quit FB because It’s a tool of the right, or Mark Z is a dick, or whatever I tell them to adjust their privacy setting and unfriend all the people causing them stress.

For seeing baby and pet pictures of relatives, FB is totally awesome. If they just could ban political shit. If your circle is at all large, it’s going to include a MAGAbot or two. For them, they will share anything that smears Democrats, facts be damned. There is no talking to them, no response will change their minds. Best thing is to unfollow them and just check in once in a while for non-MAGA stuff.

When I look at FB on my phone, there is a shortcut called “Watch.” It’s usually filled with stupid prank videos, people bursting into tears when they get a puppy, and no small amount of “cheesecake.” However, yesterday there was a video of a woman pulling down her pants in a grocery store, taking a dump on the floor, pulling her pants back up and walking away as if nothing had happened. I was beyond offended, so much so that I looked up how to delete the “Watch” tab from my phone and then did it.

How about a link?
