I was just on fb and appearantly, it changes for all in a week.
Where did you read this?
I saw it yesterday on the website for ABC News. I’ll try to find a link.
ETA: Here ya go!
Although** A Clockwork Melon** hasn’t posted yet, he had some issues with it and couldn’t reverse it. On that basis I wouldn’t go for it. I like simple.
No, they didn’t. They didn’t change one word of their privacy policy. They just made it a Google-wide policy instead of individual policies for Google, YouTube, Blogger, etc. This is a good thing.
I’m guessing these things go hand in hand. I’m a moderate FB user, which is to say I don’t play FarmVille but I do check it several times a day. I put family photos up for my friends and relatives to see, going back over 5 years now from when I first signed up. If you go back far enough, I’m sure you’ll find pictures of my oldest child as a newborn.
And that’s kinda why I like the timeline thing. I actually have a history with facebook that I wouldn’t mind preserving, and given another 5 years of use, which seems likely, FB will have a good chunk of my life documented.
I also follow the “Don’t post anything you don’t want your grandma/boss/the police to see” rule.
If you hardly use facebook, I can see where timeline would be pointless.
You can still go back and delete individual posts after your profile has been switched to a Timeline, right? I think that would make it easier if for some reason I wanted to delete everything I posted in 2009, or whatever.
I definitely fall into the “you are solely responsible for the stupid shit you post on the internet” camp, and I like being able to go to a particular year. But dammit the profile page really is hideously busy and hard to read.
I love being able to go back in time, see what crazy videos and stuff I posted while under the influence, and see what state of mind I was in as my mom was dying from cancer.Cathartic for me, anyways!!!
It’s pointless for me. I don’t use FB very much to begin with. I also have an issue with putting photos of myself and/or what’s left of my family online anywhere. I’ve never been very forthcoming online re my own personal business because of the “once it’s online it’s there for eternity” factor. I can understand why some people may value a dedicated place to put everything. though.
Count me in with those who dislike the Timeline, but it really doesn’t matter since I hardly ever visit people’s profile pages.
What I dread is the inevitable wailing and gnashing of teeth on my news feed every time Facebook makes a change. People whine and whine, but do they delete their accounts? Hardly ever. And this is exactly what makes Zuckerberg an evil genius.
I suppose that makes this post a perfect follow-up. I have a FB account. I check it about once every 6 months or so. Every once in a while, someone who I actually like will put something up that makes it through my spam filter on my FB-dedicated email (which I check about once a month) and then I’ll congratulate them for their new dog or child or whatnot by phone or when I see them next.
Because of the timeline feature, I am deleting my account today. I’ve had enough with all of the constantly changing crap regarding what people can and can’t access, what they do or don’t keep forever about you (not much in the don’t category any more) and whether I have to log in specifically this week or not to change some setting so that I don’t have my stuff posted all over the universe.
Screw them. I’m sick of it, I never use it, and now they’re making it easier for people to scroll through my whole life. I’m done. If anyone I know has their announcements solely on FB anymore, I’ll just be out of the loop and hope mutual friends clue me in. It isn’t worth the hassle.
Yep, same as before.
The timeline feature, in theory, is a great addition to Facebook. The aesthetic quality they chose to bestow upon it is awful, and the MOMENT I open up a profile page that uses it, I close it immediately. Since I guess it’s going to be forced on everyone now, I just won’t use Facebook to look at people’s profiles. It’ll become another instant messenger program, more or less.
I’m only 25, and haven’t really ever complained about any of the other Facebook changes before. Timeline looks awful though, functionality aside. I sincerely hope they rework it.
I think I’m the one person that actually likes and uses Timeline. I edited my Timeline to include events and photos back to the 60’s (yes, I’m old), and I have no problem with letting people see photos and statuses (stasusi?) from my past three or four years as a Facebook member.
Maybe those people that have something to hide need to do a little work deleting those things that they don’t want others to dig up. After all, Google is going to dig it up anyway, even if Facebook doesn’t.
I follow the grandmother rules too, plus I only friend people I would actually enjoy having lunch with. Not only is there nothing on my FB page that I feel the need to hide, but I can’t imagine who (aside from my actual friends) would actually give a shit about anything on my FB page.
The other thing is that Facebook changes things so often, if you don’t like timeline just give it a minute. It’ll be something else soon enough.
In regard to the “grandmother” rule: 99% of my “friends” have met me IRL.
My stars and garters, you would say “shit” in front of your grandmother!? You people have permissive grandmothers. Mine would have beaten me with her cane for that.
Never! But then*, I didn’t post that on facebook
- At first I forgot to put a space between but and then, so it looked like butthen…and I read it like butt hen..heh heh, butt hen. I wouldn’t say that to my grandmother either.
I continue to be baffled by this sort of stuff. Just don’t share things online that you don’t want others to know, just like you should never allow yourself to be filmed or photographed doing something you don’t want others to see.
Seems to me that if you’re worried about Facebook timeline, you’ve already screwed something up.
What do we all think of The Straight Dope’s search tool that lets us go back and see all of your posts ever? OMG!!
