I’ve seen the faces like smiley faces and rolling eye faces. Where do you learn how to do them?
Just a couple of tips from someone who has screwed up the coding many times: sometimes you will get an ‘accidental’ smilie. You didn’t want it there. It changes the whole meaning of what you said.
You can avoid this with three steps:
-
You can check the box under the reply box that says: Disable Smilies in This Post, but it will disable all smilies.
-
If you want some smilies, then watch your spacing and typing to make sure you get the ones you wanted.
Note: I have added slashes to clarify the examples - you would normally type these without the slashes. Ironically, I did not want accidental smilies ruining my examples.
[li] if the last colon is too near a parenthesis, you will get a smile instead of what you planned: e.g. if you type in :/eek/: ) expecting :eek: ), you would get :eek:) - the yellow happy face instead of the blue frightened face. Put a space between the last colon and the parenthesis.[/li]
[li] The colon and the capital D make :D. Really annoying when you get[/li]
::Does the happy dance::
when you wanted
::/Does the happy dance::
or ruins the whole meaning when you wanted to say
::/pouts::
and get
::pouts::
Again, a space works if you do not want to disable smilies.
[li]The embarrassed guy is made with the lowercase o, not the capital O or the number zero. :o, not or :0[/li]
[li] It’s hard to read, but the happy Jewish guy shows up with the semicolon and the lowercase j. ;j not :j[/li]
3) Print this and tape it to your monitor in 72 point bold:
I will not only preview my post, I will actually proofread it before hitting “Submit Reply”.
You can experiment with and practice them here on ATMB. It saves you a lot of embarassment, and saves you asking/begging/pleading with a moderator to fix your coding in a post. They usually don’t mind doing it once or twice, but over and over again gets really tiresome.
Welcome and have fun here. We’re usually good people.

[Been there, done that unintentionally, hit “submit reply”, banged head on the desk after seeing what happened]

Cool. Thanks Screech-owl!
