The one who, when he was a senator, blamed the then-president for high gas prices but now, as president, says he can’t do anything? You’re kind of stuck in the past here. There’s no doubt that all politicians play fast and loose with the facts, but do you really think Obama would be at the top of that list? So far you’ve pointed at one statement about a health care system that hasn’t been fully implimented, a political jab that he is being hypocritical about, and something about a preacher that so far has seems to be accurate. However, when it comes to politicians, they have always as a group been highly anti-facts, and are largely responsible for the death of facts.

Well, the idea is that (in the West) the Classical Greek philosophers were the ones who codified how is it that we figure out if a real observed event is an instance of a reliable* factual description of what’s happening*. In that sense, “the statue fell on Ephistelios and crushed him” is an observation of real events, “unbalanced, unbraced heavy objects tip over and can crush people” is the “fact about the world”.

Just to be slightly contrarian, the government does lie to us and this destroys their credibility when they tell the truth. The government that is bent on stopping pot use, when tobacco is demonstrably worse is not believed when they say that GMO crops are safe. (Before you jump on me for that, contemplate the fact that every single cultivated crop is genetically modified, mostly by people flying by the seat of their pants and hardly ever tested for safety.)
Since the authorities lie with impunity and people know, they don’t know whom to believe.
