http://www.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/europe/10/07/gen.blair.speech/ is a transcript of Blair’s speech.

This is an excerpt on why the attack was justified…

It was an attack on lives and livelihoods. The airlines, tourism and other industries have been affected, and economic confidence has suffered with all that means to British jobs and business. Our prosperity and standard of living require us to deal with the terrorist threat. We act also because the al Qaida network and the Taliban regime are funded in large parts on the drugs trade – 90 percent of all heroin sold in Britain originates from Afghanistan. Stopping that trade is again directly in our interests.

"I wish to say finally as I have said many times before that this is not a war with Islam.

"It angers me, as it angers the vast majority of Muslims, to hear bin Laden and his associates described as Islamic terrorists. They are terrorists pure and simple. Islam is a peaceful and tolerant religion, and the acts of these people are contrary to the teachings of the Koran.

NATO said it would honor a U.S. request and soon deploy AWACS surveillance aircraft for anti-terrorist operations in the United States. NATO officials declined to say why the United States had asked for the AWACS, or whether they would be used to free up U.S. aircraft for deployment in other regions. The United States has a fleet of 33 AWACS planes, including 28 at an airbase in Oklahoma.

Osama Bin Laden has issued a strongly-worded warning to the United States in a recorded statement broadcast on al-Jazeera television. Below is the full text of his statement.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/south_asia/newsid_1585000/1585636.stm

Praise be to God and we beseech Him for help and forgiveness.

We seek refuge with the Lord of our bad and evildoing. He whom God guides is rightly guided but he whom God leaves to stray, for him wilt thou find no protector to lead him to the right way.

I witness that there is no God but God and Mohammed is His slave and Prophet.

What the United States tastes today is a very small thing compared to what we have tasted for tens of years

God Almighty hit the United States at its most vulnerable spot. He destroyed its greatest buildings.

Praise be to God.

Here is the United States. It was filled with terror from its north to its south and from its east to its west.

Praise be to God.

What the United States tastes today is a very small thing compared to what we have tasted for tens of years.

Our nation has been tasting this humiliation and contempt for more than 80 years.

Its sons are being killed, its blood is being shed, its holy places are being attacked, and it is not being ruled according to what God has decreed.

Despite this, nobody cares.

When Almighty God rendered successful a convoy of Muslims, the vanguards of Islam, He allowed them to destroy the United States.

But if the sword falls on the United States after 80 years, hypocrisy raises its head lamenting the deaths of these killers who tampered with the blood, honour, and holy places of the Muslims

I ask God Almighty to elevate their status and grant them Paradise. He is the one who is capable to do so.

When these defended their oppressed sons, brothers, and sisters in Palestine and in many Islamic countries, the world at large shouted. The infidels shouted, followed by the hypocrites.

One million Iraqi children have thus far died in Iraq although they did not do anything wrong.

Despite this, we heard no denunciation by anyone in the world or a fatwa by the rulers’ ulema [body of Muslim scholars].

Israeli tanks and tracked vehicles also enter to wreak havoc in Palestine, in Jenin, Ramallah, Rafah, Beit Jala, and other Islamic areas and we hear no voices raised or moves made.

They champion falsehood, support the butcher against the victim, the oppressor against the innocent child.
May God mete them the punishment they deserve
But if the sword falls on the United States after 80 years, hypocrisy raises its head lamenting the deaths of these killers who tampered with the blood, honour, and holy places of the Muslims.

The least that one can describe these people is that they are morally depraved.

They champion falsehood, support the butcher against the victim, the oppressor against the innocent child.

May God mete them the punishment they deserve.

I say that the matter is clear and explicit.

In the aftermath of this event and now that senior US officials have spoken, beginning with Bush, the head of the world’s infidels, and whoever supports him, every Muslim should rush to defend his religion.

They came out to fight Islam in the name of terrorism

They came out in arrogance with their men and horses and instigated even those countries that belong to Islam against us.

They came out to fight this group of people who declared their faith in God and refused to abandon their religion.

They came out to fight Islam in the name of terrorism.

Hundreds of thousands of people, young and old, were killed in the farthest point on earth in Japan.

[For them] this is not a crime, but rather a debatable issue.

They bombed Iraq and considered that a debatable issue.

These incidents divided the entire world into two regions - one of faith where there is no hypocrisy and another of infidelity, from which we hope God will protect us

But when a dozen people of them were killed in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, Afghanistan and Iraq were bombed and all hypocrite ones stood behind the head of the world’s infidelity - behind the Hubal [an idol worshipped by pagans before the advent of Islam] of the age - namely, America and its supporters.

These incidents divided the entire world into two regions - one of faith where there is no hypocrisy and another of infidelity, from which we hope God will protect us.

neither the United States nor he who lives in the United States will enjoy security before we can see it as a reality in Palestine and before all the infidel armies leave the land of Mohammed

The winds of faith and change have blown to remove falsehood from the [Arabian] peninsula of Prophet Mohammed, may God’s prayers be upon him.

As for the United States, I tell it and its people these few words: I swear by Almighty God who raised the heavens without pillars that neither the United States nor he who lives in the United States will enjoy security before we can see it as a reality in Palestine and before all the infidel armies leave the land of Mohammed, may God’s peace and blessing be upon him.

God is great and glory to Islam.

May God’s peace, mercy, and blessings be upon you.

this is a picture of the food packets being dropped.

“The rations were developed as a civilian version of the military’s Meals-Ready-To-Eat and contain an assortment of vegetables and fruit, nut and grain-based foods but no animal or animal by-products”

In an unusual display of political unity, the top leaders of both parties in Congress issued a joint statement today endorsing President Bush’s decision to begin military strikes in Afghanistan.

The statement was issued by the Republican leaders, Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois and Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi, and the Democratic leaders, Representative Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri and Senator Tom Daschle of South Dakota.

“We strongly support the operation President Bush ordered our military forces to carry out today,” the congressional leaders said in their one-paragraph statement. “The administration has properly made it clear that today’s actions and any future actions are directed against those who perpetrated the heinous attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, not against Islam or the people of Afghanistan. We stand united with the president and with our troops and will continue to work together to do what is necessary to bring justice to those terrorists and those who harbor them.”

JSA is an admitted news geek…
Oh well, anything to fight ignorance.

way to go JSA. It was great to have all that info gathered together for ease of use. Very cool. Thank you.

Thanks for the kind words. I will try and keep this updated as much as possible.
It helps me to keep up with things.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Monday described the weekend attacks in Afghanistan as “very successful,” with two or three dozen military targets.

Among the targets, Rumsfeld said, were airfields, artillery and training camps that “support the al Qaeda network.”

Rumsfeld made the comments soon after the British Ministry of Defense announced that 30 military sites were targeted and struck. The British defense minister denied civilians were targeted.

MARTIAL LAW IMPLEMENTED IN THE US

Troops have entered city streets, administrative and governmental buildings, as well as memorials of culture and architecture are being guarded. The cities are divined into responsibility zones, in business districts check points are being created, which can be get over only while possessing certain permit. Parking is interdicted near to administrative buildings. Pursuit planes have been lifted off ground controlling the air space.
These security measures (nothing of the kind took place since the WWII) were taken by the US just after launching the military action against Afghanistan.
In his TV speech, George Bush appealed Americans for regarding with understanding the necessity of such measures. He personally obliged the governors of States to engage National Guard in guarding local public places.
“To defend the fatherland, the government has engaged reserves”, George Bush said in his TV speech translated in the US just before bombardments.

TALIBAN LEADER AND OSAMA BIN LADEN LEAVE KANDAHAR IN UNKNOWN DIRECTION

Shortly after the US strikes at Afghanistan began, Taliban leader mullah Omar and Osama bin Laden and their families left Kandahar on board of two small planes moving in an unknown direction, a correspondent of the Gulf News newspaper /UAE/ reports from the Pakistani town of Quetta.
In three air raids, the USA has delivered missile strikes at 6 Afghan towns – Kabul, Jelalabad, Herat, Bagram and Mazar-e-Sharif, destroying all Taliban air fields and headquarters.

Just followed a link and there was the story…

I thought this was supposed to be “facts only.”

The attacks were spearheaded by US and British cruise missiles fired from naval vessels in the Arabian Sea and included long-range bombers flying from bases in the US and aircraft flying from carriers in the region.
The first manoeuvres involved 15 bombers, including B-2 Stealth bombers flying direct from the US, 25 strike aircraft and 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The B-2s dropped their satellite-guided bombs and continued on to Diego Garcia, a British island in the Indian Ocean. The B-2 can cover the whole world from air bases in Missouri, Diego Garcia or Guam with just one mid-air refuelling.
B-52 bombers also dropped dozens of 500lb bombs on al-Qaeda terrorist training camps in eastern Afghanistan, a US official said.
The death count includes:

A total of 10 people killed near Kabul Airport.
Another 10 died in an attack on the Voice of Shariat radio central office, also in Kabul.
At least two people were killed and four injured during strikes on Kandahar Airport in southern Afghanistan, the Taliban claimed.
The Ministry of Defence building in Kabul was also targeted while electricity supplies in the city have been cut off.
Explosions were also heard in Herat, in the west of the country.

Eutychus55,
Here was my logic. I was checking some international headlines. It was interesting to me to see the Russian response. I certainly do not agree with the story.
Whether or not the story was written is not in dispute. I suppose that journalism always has the personal perspective of the reporter.
