Factual question about arts: Where to post?

If I have a factual question about a typical CS topic, e. g. “Which actor played character X in movie Y?”, where should I post it? GQ or CS?

People who frequent Cafe Society are more likely to know offhand, and they’re more likely to be interested in the question. So I’d suggest putting it in CS. It’ll probably get moved there anyway, because if you put it in GQ, and it gets answered, people are going to discuss character X and movie Y in general.

That makes sense. Thank you.

Lynn, would it be junior moddish of me to suggest some similar advice? That if you have a factual question about religion or philosopy — say, whether Jesus really existed, or whether Kant really believed that existence is not a predicate — that those go in Great Debates rather than General Questions for the same reason you have articulated; namely, that discussion about the topic is likely to ensue once the question has been answered?

Yes, a question like this should go in CS, even though it is purely factual.

There are other entertainment-related questions that are more of a gray area. For example, right now there is a question in GQ on whether J.K. Rowling made more money on the Harry Potter books or the movies. I have left it there because it’s primarily a discussion on business issues rather than on the books and movies themselves. (However, it probably could have equally well gone into CS to begin with.)

There is also a question in GQ about what words are used in different languages for “playing” an instrument. While this potentially have gone in CS, it’s primarily about language rather than music and so can be left in GQ.

Another frequent case is a question about whether some event or situation depicted in a movie or book could possibly happen, or if there have been similar real-life events. I tend to leave these in GQ since they are more about the events than about the movie or book.

Yeah, agreeing with both mods who have chimed in. Our forums have some grey areas of overlap, and we just live with it. The question really is where someone’s post will get the best responses, and the mods rarely care about something that’s in the “wrong” forum.

And Liberal, the info about where to post what is pretty much public info, so that’s not junior modding. That’s being helpful.

Great. Thanks, Dex.
