Fair price for 1997 Camry starter motor?

My 97 Camry wouldn’t start this morning and I tried jumping it and it still wouldn’t start:mad:. AAA tech comes out and says “What’s it doing?” “I don’t think it’s cranking” I say.

He turns the key and it just clicks. Turns it again and it starts:eek: Says I should get a new starter because it could happen again at any time.

What’s a fair price for parts and labor?

Autozone lists a starter for a 1997 Camry for $191 ($129 after exchange of your old starter). That’s a rebuilt starter – your Toyota dealer would undoubtedly charge a price several times that for a new one.

I could swap a starter in, say, three hours, more if I’m talking and taking breaks and looking stuff up in the shop manual (although I’ve never done it on a Camry). A pro could do it in one. So figure one hour of shop time. Two, at the worst.

On our Toyota Corolla (and our Chrysler minivan, and my Dodge Omni), the problem was a couple contacts inside the starter solenoid. Cost about $5 for the parts. Of course, I had to take the starter off and dismantle it to get to them.

I paid $200 last year for a rebuilt starter and installation on my 97 Camry. And yeah, you’ll want to get that fixed because it’s only about 2 weeks from click, click start to click, click, never gonna start.

Do not go to your dealer. I went to an automobile electrical shop because they tested my starter for me for free, then gave me a decent quote for repair.
