Fake Paypal email???

Ok, I just got an email from service@paypal.com today to confirm my identity. Strange thing because the link it told me to follow doesn’t have paypal on it. http://210.187.122.110/Verify.htm Secondly, I did an IPLOOK and it’s not PAYPAL! I did send the email to spoof@paypal.com Hopefully, they’ll investigage it.

Anyone get the same email from paypal???

From my IPLOOKUP…This is what I got:

I got a very similar sort of thing posing as an eBay email. I knew pretty much that eBay would never ask me for verification of anything, but this email wanted checking account numbers, wire transfer codes(!), and just about every piece of information that would have been necessary for a depressingly thorough identity theft. I suppose if people are falling for this kind of thing, I see why identity theft is so common these days.

Snopes has covered this.

Thta old scam has bee going around for ages. Heck even I got that PayPal message and I don’t hav a PayPal account.

Got a weird one from “Yahoo” too once. It was kind of funny because I happened to be writing an article about how poorly customer service deals with complaints about illegal activities. It povided a perfect case study opportunity. (And wow, were the Yahoo responses clueless. And funny in a sad kind of way.)

I got it everyday for 3 months. You can forward it to spoof@paypal.com, but it doesn’t seem to change anything if you do.

It’s been happening with Earthlink, too. Spoof emails that try to get your logon info - or your credit card info.

I got a supposed Earthlink e-mail last week with a lovely virus riding along.

I’ve gotten fake e-bay messages too. And Citibank.

There’s scum everywhere apparently.

I got an email from “eBay” yesterday that said that my account had been suspended because of repeated attempts to access it from a “foreign IP address” or something like that. It included a link to help reset it.

I placed a bid on something today. No suspension.

My friend just had money taken from his PayPal account and he’s having a heck of a time trying to do something about it. It seems that it’s not PayPal’s problem, not eBay’s problem, not anybody’s problem! He’s not the type of person to have responded to that type of scam e-mail, so I don’t know exactly how his problem came about. Poor guy lost about 300$, though. And doesn’t that give access to his credit card too?

On the topic of scam e-mails, I got THREE today from some Microsoft-type address telling me to “download this essential patch now!” Riiiiiiiiight. Thank goodness we have an antivirus program scanning incoming e-mail, because I know that’s something my Mom would open.
