Fall Garden Thread

September is almost here and I am still interested in home grown food.

I had a horribly late start to my garden, I am just now getting my first green beans. My chard is still not big enough to start harvesting. my corn is just starting to put out pollen tassels (yes, I know there’s a risk it won’t make ears before hard frost. And something ate ALL my kale)

So… what CAN be planted September 1?

Radishes. They don’t take long to grow, and you need cool weather so they’ll make radishes and not just be all stringy greens (which I will eat anyway, but what I really want are the pretty roots) Those will be going in next weekend, and I anticipate the first crop by the end of the month.

Peas went in 12 days ago, they’ve sprouted and today I thinned them out.

What else could I plant September 1 and have a reasonable chance of harvesting before winter?

I’m in northwest Indiana, hardiness zone 5 (or 5b, according to the USDA). We’ve had snow in late September, but not usually until late October . Some years I’m still harvesting from the garden at Thanksgiving, though that’s a crapshoot.

Lettuce, spinach, turnip greens, maybe beets.

Really? I have all of those, might spend a few seeds and hope for the best.
