Fall SDMB Weight Loss Thread

Done.

My goal for this week is to log everything I eat. So far the threat of logging has kept me from eating a few things, but that’s not my focus. The stories here and there and inspiring.

I’m actually doing really well with that - I think I’m very lucky in that I can have a little bit of a treat and it’s enough for me. My real problem is that my ulcer started acting up almost as soon as I started getting serious about tracking what I ate and keeping my calories down - many nights I have the choice of gnawing gut pain, or have half a sandwich before bed, and I’ll take the sandwich and have the weight loss take a little longer. I also hurt my foot when we moved at the end of August, and it is slooooooooowly healing - probably in part because I just refuse to stop walking on it. My calorie intake is so small (I aim for under 1500 per day) that I really want that extra 200-400 calories I can have if I go for a good hike every day. I’m still down 10 pounds, though, even with these challenges.

This is so cool, ivylass. I got happy and slightly teary just reading that.

These threads always inspire me. I can’t get behind people at the gym or in daily life who lose weight; dammit I’m smart and I’d rather read a book or watch 30 Rock than workout. But posters here share similar sentiments, so it really helps.

Well, I took off the Freshman 15 when I was a sophomore, but now throughly engrossed in beating the Dental Admissions Test 25. I’m about 11 down, and was 13 down but I slacked in going to the gym, from 6 to just 2-3 days a week. I’m doing more frequent ab workouts, as I’ve noticed I’ve lost most of my weight from my hips, sides, and thighs, but little from my actual stomach. I know spot-reducing is contentious, but it’s worth a shot.

My biggest problem is portion control; I eat incredibly well (very healthy latin and mediterranean, salads and fruit like it’s going out of style, meat only 1-2 times per week, usually fish), but it’s PORTIONS that kill me. It was actually this recipe for Whole Wheat Ravioli & Vegetable soup that got me back on the wagon: Ravioli & Vegetable Soup. I spiced it with so much cayenne that I could only eat a serving.

Also, making my own healthy desserts from EatingWell (such as this sour cherry slump here Healthy Cherry Recipes or an apple crisp here 20+ Healthy Apple Recipes for Fall) really help as well. In the summer, a 100 calorie Klondie or Skinny Cow would help, but now I need something a bit more comforting. Fruit in a dessert made with half or all whole wheat crust is a great compromise.

The shakes are good. Really good. But yeah, it’s seriously expensive.

That said, another 4lbs this week.

lindsay, I figured something out not too long ago that has really helped me - everyone always says find the exercise that you like and do that, but that never worked for me. Well, I don’t like any exercise, but I have to do it, so I just do it - I consider it a chore like brushing and flossing my teeth. As an adult there are always things you have to do that you don’t want to, and exercising regularly is just one of them for me.

Milestone! The scale this morning reports that I have now lost 25 pounds. Woot!

10 more until I am at my lowest weight as an adult, and 15 more after that until I’m officially not overweight by BMI. (I know, I know, BMI is flawed, but it’s just nice to have this little thing that officially says, "You’re not overweight! )

In the last week and a half I’ve dropped about 4 pounds on the scale, after nearly a month of hovering around the 21-23 pounds lost mark. I guess when my body decides to break a plateau, it goes all in.

I am having a whole wheat turkey ‘n’ mustard sandwich, a “CarbMaster” yogurt, and an X-Large Tim Horton’s pumpkin flavored coffee to celebrate!

And you’re running! WOOT!

I loved crossing from “obese” to “overweight” on the BMI chart, so I could gleefully say, “Yay, I’m overweight!” I’ve got about 17 pounds to go to get to the “normal” range. (Wow, only that much? First time I computed it!)

Wifey and I are doing WW together for the first time (she’s gone alone and I’ve tried in the past to follow along … no luck).

After week 1 we’re down 4.5 (me) and 5 (her)…! ~ 55 to go for both of us…

Yay us!

And everyone else here!

You guys all totally rock. What an inspiration!

We just discovered there’s a T.O.P.S. meeting fairly close by every Wednesday - I might have to look into that. I hate the idea of paying money to lose weight, but external motivation is a good thing.

I’ve lost 52 pounds since March (237 -> 185). I’ve been exercising for 30 minutes a day and have kept my calorie intake below 2000 a day. I haven’t had any soda, caffeine or chocolate in 8 months now. Once I hit my goal weight of 170 I’ll definitely be in the best shape of my life.

It’s a really nice feeling looking in the mirror and not being ashamed of my body… I can even see my abs starting to form, which is just crazy. Maybe someday soon I’ll actually know what it feels like to be ogled.

I exercise for 30 minutes or more every day and keep my calories below 1500, and I haven’t lost a goddamned pound in weeks. I don’t mind doing hard things when I get results, but doing hard things for no results - not a big fan.
