I hereby call the August thread of the SDMB Weight Loss thread to order!
Once again, I will put in my monthly plug for SparkPeople. I joined them in April, and have lost 19 lbs so far!
My next weigh in is on Sunday. I tried yoga last night. I did enjoy the stretching, but the class started at 7pm, which means I didn’t get home until 8:30p. I don’t want to do that to my family twice a week, so I might just go once a week or twice a month. It’s not strenuous yoga, so I can’t really replace one of my cardio sessions with yoga and still meet my goals.
Weigh-in today…I have lost another 2 lbs! I have had a slow and steady weight loss since joining SparkPeople of 1 to 1 1/2 lbs per week. I am six pounds away from my goal weight and one pound away from my goal range (I figure a five pound deviation from my goal weight should be fine.)
I “kind of got off of” my good eating habits, and gained back at least ten pounds. That’s why I kind of avoided the July thread. But I’m back on track and losing some again. I don’t think it will take too long to lose that weight. I’m really going to try an extra regimen of exercise, to supplement my karate class workouts.
I’m back from another weeks holiday - this time I went for a few runs, but not too far.
So I am still 93kg.
But…
I made my wife take me shopping for new shorts - my last summers shorts (38" waist) would fall down without a belt. We found some shorts, grabbed a 36", and I tried them on.
And then I asked my wife for some 34" waist shorts. I am getting smaller. Yeah.
193, no change from last week, but still 50.5 down on the year and 95 from when I started. Was hoping to have lost another pound as that would see me to another significant threshold… one-third of my starting weight. It’ll have to wait for now.
I bought two pairs of pants today…size 8! I’ll have to get new jeans too, but that will have to wait until next payday. I thought it more important I have pants to wear to work that I don’t have to keep hitching up.
And my size 8 jean shorts I bought a month ago, when they were a tad bit snug but fit fine? They still fit fine…and they’re not quite as snug anymore.
I’ve been watching what I eat since June. I have not been weighing myself as a measure of my progress, since I prefer to not be caught up on the numbers. I’m going by how I feel and look.
To start, I calculated my BMR, and figured that anything slightly above that should be my target daily calorie intake. I do not have a forbidden foods list-- I still eat chocolate and french fries and pizza-- but I find I desire them less, since I’d rather spend my calories on other things. I drink only diet soda now, and I’ve added microwaveable meals to my diet. I like them because the portions are measured out for you and the calories are right there on the box. I notice I’m slowly adjusting to the smaller portion size and will eat less when we cook from scratch.
I live about a mile from work and I walk there daily. I’d like to integrate some weight training, but I will wait until my changed eating habits are a little more set. Don’t wanna change too much too quickly.
So far I’ve made decent progress. I feel a little thinner, and my jeans (the one which for some reason felt tighter than my other pair despite the two being the same size) fit better. Hell, I need a belt for it now. My SO also says I look lighter.
I’m pretty pleased with how it’s going. I know eventually I’ll want to lose more and lose it faster, and I figure at that point I can make more radical changes. But so far I’m satified enough to keep doing what I’m doing, which is fine for now.
Hey all. I’m still holding steady in my temporary “maintenance mode” at 163-164. I haven’t done too well at cutting back on my workouts like I planned (isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?) so I’m still going six days a week. I have been a little more lax on my eating. I also increased the amount of weight that I lift in my strength training. As a result, I suspect that I’ve been retaining some water in my muscles over the past couple of weeks. Judging by the scale yesterday and today, I think that is finally starting to come off, so it will be interesting to see if I’m still losing despite eating a bit more. I really would like to hit 160, though 155 scares me. Can I maintain that weight? I just don’t know.
I’m really diggin Weight Watchers. I have found that I need the meetings, the checking in, the weighing in and the encouragement and group interaction.
My average weight is 166.9 which is lighter than I’ve been in years. I’m very excited and happy to be losing. Slowly but steadily.
My two short term goals are to 1. Weigh less than my husband (163) and 2. Get down to the upper number for the healthy weight for my height (154)
I don’t really have a goal weight yet but I’m thinking 140 or maybe mid 130s. I’m a little afraid that if I get too thin I’ll look older. I’m at that age where everything is sagging. The extra fat keeps the wrinkles plumped up
I just got back from 2 weeks of vacation and lost 6 pounds. That’s what happens when you camp and hike for a week. For the first time since March, I didn’t measure out all of my food; I think I’m beginning to figure out how much of something is a decent serving size. I’m still huge at 212 (and 5’2") but I’m down 33 pounds since mid-March and I feel great.
I lost another half pound at Fat Club last night which is good because I’ve really lost the plot with things just recently. I’m on holiday next week in Hungary so that will be a bit of a booze-fest as we’re at a music festival.
After that, I really must get to grips with the diet again.
On the plus side, I’ve been shopping for cheap holiday clothes because the pair of shorts I wore last month in Hungary don’t fit any more 'cos they keep falling down. Potentially quite embarrassing, right?
2 Questions for any one who’s been working out for a while.
I need a good shoe. I’d like something good for Zumba workouts and walking on the treadmill. I don’t do any running. For Zumba the bottom needs to not be very grippy but not too slippery. I had trouble with some moves because my current shoe gripped the floor too well and I couldn’t slide.
Also, I have flat feet and need arch supports and possible ankle supports because I have a lot of weakness in my ankles but I can always use separate ankle supports if I can’t find a shoe with everything.
I also don’t want to spend a fortune on a shoe that may turn out to not be comfortable in the long term.
So does any one have a brand or style they can recommend?
Everything I have read and my trainer has says it that you should take a day off between strength training. Well, I’d like to know if I could work another area of my body on the off days? Currently I am only working my arms and doing some abdominal crunches. I 'd really like to work my legs, too (aside from the treadmill walking) so I was hoping I could do some leg strength training on the off days.
I can ask my trainer but I don’t always see her.
Wile E, I don’t have a good answer to your first question since I’m not familiar with Zumba. I did just buy a new pair of Adidas over the weekend that have great arch support. I got them for under $60 on sale (orig. $95).
As far as your second question, yes, you can definitely strength train two days in a row as long as you are training different areas on the body (upper body one day, lower the next.) As long as you’re not working the same muscles two days in a row, you’ll be fine. There are a lot of people who do this. I personally do the whole body each time I strength train (3x/week), but I can definitely see the advantages to splitting it up.
I lost 1.8 lbs on the Weight Watchers scale putting me at 169 “officially”. Meanwhile my husband has also lost 2 lbs meaning that it’ll just take that much longer for me to reach my first goal.
I’m going to have to work on fattening him up a bit.
It has been a couple of weeks, now that you mention it. I’ll try to remember to do that tonight. The last few times I measured there was either no change or very little change. My clothes have been fitting about the same as well.
