Fallin' for the Rants: October minirants

Not a Frenchman from Quebec, but can you use a different standard label for those jerks? Maybe the 11"x17" inch ought to do it.

Why should other people’s culture be modified for your convenience?

One person’s “culture” is another person’s “this hinders my entire ability to perform what should be a straightforward task at my job” nonsense.

Maybe there’s a way for TPTB to come up with a solution that makes everyone happy?

… and maybe a fairy will magically POOF! $10,000 into my bank account.

Yes, 11"x17" ought to do it!

In all seriousness, my friend has always used Avery 5160 standard labels, which are arranged in a 3x10 pattern, 30 to a sheet. Larger labels would mean 2x6 or 2x7, less than half the number of labels per sheet, which seems awfully wasteful for the relatively small percentage of customers with these kinds of Quebec addresses.

ETA: I’ve sometimes noticed that in mailings I get from big companies, the address seems to be in an unnecessarily small font in a large amount of available space. Now I think I know why – it’s for all those customers living on RUE CLAUDE-REMY-BOUZEMONT-DE-LA-GRANDE-FROMAGE in the town of SAINT-MARIE-DE-SACRE-BLEU-SUR-LA-RIVIERE-PUANTE!

I’m not asking anyone to change their culture. I used to live in Quebec and these kinds of place names were familiar. I never gave it a second thought until my tech background suddenly made me the unpaid mail-merge flunky for my friend. I’m happy to do it, but when formatting address labels these sorts of place names are both amusing and, yes, a little annoying.

I know this isn’t a very serious discussion but I can’t help but chuckle at this scenario, were it to come to pass.

In this scenario, the “powers that be” would prob be Canada Post or the Canadian federal government, trying to tell Québec, the province with a francophone history , cultural majority, and official language, to modify their names, street names, and city names, to suit the preferences of some dude in Toronto who prefers to format mailing labels for shorter, proper, English names.

You’d have a riot at minimum and possibly even a successful sovereignty referendum in response!

I don’t disagree that it can be a pain to fit these names into standard forms, but omg the consequences of trying to change this (in the absurd hypothetical) could tear the country apart.

Probably less trouble to get different labels, or sort Québec addresses into a separate mail merge and print job.

I’m in Canada, work here, live here, citizen here. My work email is getting 30-50 emails a day from Trump and other Republican candidates, or scammers using their names, asking me for support, electoral and financial. My email ends “.ca,” so it’s obvious it’s a Canadian address, and I haven’t responded to any of them. I report some as phishing, block some, etc., but they keep on coming. When will those people run out of pixels?!

The few I’ve inadvertently clicked on are ugly and stupid: BIG FONTS AND ALL CAPS, primary colours like it was 1994, and probably marching ants. Sheesh.

Set up two databases; one for Quebec dwellers, and the other for people whose addresses are configured sanely (that is, the rest of Canada). Then set the printer parameters for each database independently.

I’ve no doubt that this is an oversimplified solution, but the basic idea seems sound.

Goddamnit, this is the second time I’ve done this. I misread my schedule yesterday so here it is not even six in the morning and I’m raring to go … but I don’t have to be to work until 1:30 today.

I didn’t go out to play music last night because I thought I had to be up early today.

I repeat … goddamnit!

I know that there is Real Hatred between Quebec and all of the other provinces… but could an independent Quebec work? Do they have the resources and the infrastructure to sustain an Independent State? And what if they failed? Wouldn’t they be easy pickings for a Putin land grab in an end-run attempt to steal all of the artic oil and put troops and tanks on the borders of all of the neighboring provinces?

I realize that Quebec has it’s pride, but wouldn’t going independent be very dangerous for both them and for the rest of Canada?

I’m getting really tired of having to call CVS pharmacy to arrange to have my prescriptions delivered. I’m an ExtraCare member, which means I get free delivery of prescriptions and most online orders. But for the past six months every time I request a refill on an existing prescription it only shows up as “ready for pickup” with the “delivery” button grayed out. So I have to call the pharmacy to dry to arrange delivery. Every time the pharmacist says they’ll fix the problem after setting up delivery for that order. They don’t seem to be able to explain what the problem is, so I’m not sure how they plan to fix it.

They ended up calling me in anyway. I’m on lunch break for a double.

Some people will say ‘the hell with that’, and just think it’s worth trying anyway. A combination of ‘wishing will make it so’ and ‘it’ll be alright on the night’.

I’d start a separate thread about that, if’n I wuz u. Doubt the convo would get much in the way of legs in a mini Pit pile.

Could your friend just quietly stop offering his wares/service to those with ‘weird’ addresses? “Hmm, so sorry, don’t know why your copy of XXXX never got there. We’ll refund your payment.”

We could definitely have a lengthy conversation about it if someone wanted to have one, but I’ll throw in my two cents here anyway.

The danger is mostly economic, and Quebec politicians and activists are well aware that their draconian policies have already resulted in Quebec taking a big economic hit. They don’t care. The motivations for those policies are purely emotional and inherently irrational.

Over the decades, major businesses have left the province, initially because of rising separatist sentiment and occasional violence, coupled with the real threat of Quebec seceding from Canada. Today the conflict mostly manifests in the form of draconian language laws, where English-speaking residents are treated not only as second-class citizens, but as overt threats. Most large businesses being predominantly or entirely English-speaking, this is not a welcoming environment, especially when the government decrees the language in which they must conduct their business.

If the politicians had a more moderate and reasonable approach to protecting the French culture, they’d have a much stronger economy. Montreal is a beautiful city and its multicultural nature has much to recommend it, but many business that would otherwise have a presence there decline to do so in the climate of hostility that’s been created. As a thriving port city, Montreal was once bigger than Toronto, but today the situation is very much reversed.

That is, however, nothing compared to what would happen if Quebec were to secede. There would be another major business exodus. And the federal contracts and handouts that already help to prop up Quebec’s economy would dry up. Their economy would collapse.

I meant no offense; at the end of the day it’s none of my business.
It just seemed like there was this huge wound in Canada that wouldn’t heal.
But maybe it is healing.

Maybe you didn’t read my last post.

I read it. I’m not close enough to the situation to evaluate it independently though.
I don’t doubt it’s your opinion and you may be 100% right.

I don’t need to be aggressive about it.

It’s not a simple question, for some fraction of the population it’s a wound that cannot heal without independence. For others, there’s definitely recognition of the reasons why the population might want independence, but more of a desire to rework with the federal government to get a different arrangement (which is, in itself, a toxic subject due to previous attempts).

The Canadoper Cafe thread in mpsims might be a good place to discuss this further. I don’t know that this board has anyone who’s actually on the sovereignty side of the discussion, though. I’m not.

I figure if the UK is struggling so much economically, Quebec would absolutely have a worse time of it. I think every province would benefit from a renegotiation with Canada, but good luck with that!

I was trying to buy some Chilean Sea Bass. One day I got as far as being in the queue, then it flashed into my cart for a millisecond before going back to the sold out message. A couple of other days trying didn’t even get me that far. Today I realized it stated 9am EST but we’re currently in EDT so I tried again at 10am; no joy then, either.
It ended today; never got to get near them. Pepperidge Farm, you screwed up; instead of making customers happy with a cute, limited, one-week-only one-off you pissed us off by making it too limited & not giving us the opportunity to buy your product.
Here’s the thing, I like Goldfish, but not the cheddar ones. $7.38 for two cute bags & a photo of something I may or may not even eat; worth it. At least $65 (the cheapest price I saw them for on ebay); no way!
