Fallout 3: Broken Steel - completed

Downloaded it today, completed it about six or seven hours later - it’s a much more engaging and varied experience than the first two DLC episodes. Even on “easy” difficulty I still managed to rack up enough XP to make it from level 20 to level 24.

You get three main campaigns, a couple of short but reasonably enjoyable side-quests, and quite a lot of gameplay. There’s variety in the scenery, and the final campaign is based in an entirely new location and feels like a decent cap to the story. Downsides? The new perks aren’t particularly good, I hate fighing Deathclaws, one of the new monsters is ridiculously powerful (took out Paladin Cross in no time), and there’s a shortage of replacements to repair some of the new weapons. But, overall, a much more enjoyable package than the previous efforts.

Questions welcome.

I was going to hold off on downloading this for a while because I understood there was some fairly serious errors with the PC version (not with the game itself but with Windows Live I think). Are you playing it on a PC or Xbox?

Also, should I start a new character? I’ve heavily modded my current character to get past the level cap (as well as a bunch of other things)…would it be best to start with a clean unmodded character/world?

Ah, I’m playing on an Xbox 360, so happily carried on with my character as was. I’ve heard that there are PC problems, certainly.

A question for those playing it on the PC. Will the Broken Steel DLC conflict with Martigen’s Mutant Mod? Given the choice I’d rather keep MMM.

I’m using that mod as well and I have no idea…the other mod I’d really like to keep is the repair mod that allows me to repair stuff (guns or armor) with scrap metal. I’d REALLY like to keep that one…

Looks like the removed the download for now, I cant find it on LIVE.

According to Kotaku there’s technical issues with both versions of Broken Steel. It wouldn’t surprise me if they took either or both down. They did the same with the 360 version of The Pitt when that came out back in March. It was 3 or 4 days before they put it back up.

Bethesda might want to look into hiring some bug testers.

Hmm. Haven’t had any problems myself - happily able to visit the off-map final campaign location again and again, and even found another side quest (as well as what appear to be some old buildings that now have explorable interiors).

Having said that, I am not impressed by…

The new albino radscorpion. Those things are fast and they are nasty. Found one just outside Arefu.

At least they’re not as bad as…

The new feral ghoul reavers - just plain lethal up close; also a ranged attack, killed Paladin Cross in seconds, and no decent booty to loot from them either.

I’ve had to resort to the Chinese stealth armour cheat just to give myself a chance against these chaps.

Hmm, having issues.

I went on LIVE from its client and downloaded Broken steel. The info thing on the page says it was installed today.

However when I go in and play from my last save, it ends like it always did. I never played on LIVE while in the game before. When I start up LIVE in the game it says I can only start a new game, it says I have no saves.

Does anybody know how to continue from a character played entirely offline? Because I am not going to go through the 100 hours or so again online, and the official forums are of no coherency whatsoever?

Playing on the PC? If so, it’s just that you have to copy your savegames from your offline account over to your LIVe account folder- I cant rememeber the location of the saves at the moment, but might very well be under my documents\my games or some such.

Have a search at the Fallout 3 forums, or the wiki - seem to remember there being plenty of guides on how to do this…

Got it played it, finished it.

GFWL is a joke; was 2 days late on it. Then it wouldn’t work when I learned up F3; so I moved the files into Fallout’s data/vid file and it works fine.
Only done it the good way yet, just started with my psychopath character. Put in the modified FEV, but nothing looks different as yet.

One or two minor issues; noticed straight away that being in the Brotherhood is almost cosmetic; talked to a scribe about repairing my gear, to which he replied “It’ll cost you…outsider.” :smack:
