Oh, then you didn’t have access to FCOM too and you had to live with the original magic system and the stupid leveling; and never saw the beauty of the world after modding it with Better Cities and Unique Landscapes.
You missed a lot; I didn’t even get halfway through the game after its initial release but enjoyed it like a kid when I could finally add a ton of mods.
If they were going to dumb things down for the “Xbox crowd” they would’ve dumbed down Morrowind too. That was on the first XB. They likely had other reasons for dumbing down Oblivion than simply putting it on consoles. And plenty of people in the “Xbox crowd” have complained about the dumbing down. Myself, I haven’t played enough of Morrowind or Oblivion (yet) to have an opinion.
I knew that would piss somebody off when I typed it. The fact is that console gamers skew towards a younger age and are less interested in PC-style RPGs. Morrowind isn’t relevant as it was released with little fanfare and later developed a cult following, while Oblivion came with television commercials and wide release. If you prefer, it was dumbed down to attract a new audience, at the expense of longtime fans. If it so happens that these new fans are console gamers, it is mostly a result of them buying the more accessible system.
As I said, they mostly learned when developing Fallout 3. However, one egregious holdover is in the Windows Live interface, I’m not sure if that’s all games or just Fallout, so we might safely blame Microsoft. The “OK” and “Cancel” buttons still say “A” and “B” (or whatever), and pushing those keys on your keyboard select the corresponding options. Every other PC application normally uses “Enter” and “Esc” for the same functions. They couldn’t even be bothered to build a new GUI for PC standards.
When developers get lazy at translating for each system, then both audiences suffer. Supposedly (no personal experience) Resident Evil 4 for PC is a terrible translation that forces you to use the keyboard to turn; the developers did not adjust the controls to fit PC standards.
Yup. Not only that, but the graphism hasn’t changed from the PS2 at all, despite the definition of a PC screen being much finer than that of a TV set. So RE4 on PC = fat pixels the size of George Lucas’ ego. No smoothing, no high res, no nothing. Brown goop as far as the eye can see, which is about ten feet.
Morrowind was developed for the PC - the xbox 360 wasn’t even out for most of its development. After they realized that porting it over was easy enough, they did so. But it was designed for the PC first, and ported over.
Yeah, I heard they were going to go to Bethesda’s office to complain, but they couldn’t put their pants on all by themselves.
