Fallout 3

How do you keep it repaired though? It’s like the Firelance…it’s a great weapon but I hesitate to use it much because I have no way of fixing it once it gets banged up (at least no way to fix it back up to full…vendors can fix them to a degree).

My personal favorite for killing stuff quick (even Deathclaws) is the Firelance…two shots at most and they are a small glowing pile of molten sand. Really loving the .50 Cal sniper rifle too, though ammo is pretty scarce.

Generally speaking, any unique weapon can be repaired in the Pipboy using a similar common weapon for parts. Hold the mouse over the weapon in question, and hit R (or whatever the button for your console is), and then it’ll bring up a menu to let you select the compatible weapons to scrap. Wazer Wifle uses the Laser Rifle for parts, Lincoln Repeater uses Hunting Rifles, etc. Of course, you can only repair weapons up to your own repair stat (after any amount of gameplay, this is far higher than what you’ll get in the Wasteland. You’d think that at least the Brotherhood or the Enclave would be better at weapons maintenance, but it seems Moira is the only one who has ever taken apart a VCR before.)

Yup…problem is that you can’t repair Vengeance with a mini-gun (maybe you can use a Laser Rifle? Hadn’t thought of that until now) and the only thing you can repair the Firelance with is the Alien Blaster…of which I only have one. You are right about the others (I didn’t know about the Lincoln Rifle until someone mentioned you can repair it with the Hunting Rifle…I assumed since it’s a .44 Cal weapon you’d need another .44 Cal rifle to repair it, of which there aren’t any afaik).

(ETA: My repair skill is 100 btw…it’s one of my tag skills on my current character)

Vengeance can be repaired with Gatling Lasers, but they are hard to find. If you’re not averse to using some cheats, and you want to keep Vengeance in good working order but don’t want to cheat to actually OBTAIN it, here’s what I would do:

First, I would download the mod that eliminates equipment degradation from FalloutNexus; should be relatively easy to find with a search.

After “legitimately” finding Vengeance in the game, use the code player.additem 000CB547 1 100 and you’ll have Vengeance at 100% condition. You can then sell the “original” Vengeance or store it someplace or whatever you prefer.

I haven’t found any Gatling lasers at all to be honest…which is why I haven’t fixed it. I found the legitimate copy a while ago, but only use it, like the Firelance, for special or dangerous missions where I know there are going to be some nasty stuff. I keep all the named weapons in a safe in my Megaton house expansion rooms for the most part.

You could also try the Repair Rethought mod. I don’t know if it handles unique weapons, but it lets you use scrap metal and other weapons to repair your normal ones.

Yeah, I’ve thought about getting that mod and giving it a try. Would be helpful as I have lockers full of all manner of weapons used simply to repair my main weapons when they get banged up. Would be nice if you could use parts from different weapons you find while wandering about to fix what you have though.

One of the named weapons I want to get some time is the named Chinese Assault rifle, since that’s one of the main weapons I use when roaming around.

Danny Kaye, along with Patty, Maxene and LaVerne.

I’ve added 60 more period songs (the first 40 More mod and twenty of my own selections from the Internet Archive).

Could you link to the mod you are using for that? I tried a mod that added 20 more period songs but it kept locking the mouse up…and it didn’t work right in any case, only occasionally actually playing the other songs. Not sure if it was conflicting with other mods I have or just badly written, but wasn’t working with my machine. Shame as it had songs from the earlier Fallout games which I really liked.

This one but now that you mention it, my game has also been freezing after I installed that and some other mods. Perhaps we’re having the same problem?

ETA: Here’s the base version of that mod, no MP3s if you just want to add your own.

Ditto, I had the same problem. In fact, I’ve sworn off mods for now; most cause my game to lock up or slow down. Cross armour repair is very useful, however, for keeping my T51-b power armour in tip top condition.

The songs mod has been the only one I’ve had serious problems with. The only other mod that has given me weird results is the one I’m using to get around the level cap. It hasn’t crashed my system but what happens is that to keep your karma you basically stay at level 20, but still level up when you get the experience (I also have a mod that lets me get new perks when I level up and also take my skills cap over 100…though it doesn’t show any number over 100, just puts a little + sign next to it). It works well, though you basically stay at 20…problem being that if you log out before you reach the next ‘level’ the next time you log in your exps go back to your base 20…so you lose everything. What that means right now is I try to play when I have enough time to reach the next level…or I just write off the exps.

It will be nice when Bethesda officially takes the level cap out so I don’t have to do this anymore.

I’m using an 80% lower degradation mod, and I got a gatling laser off of something… possibly when I got ambushed by a Deathclaw fast traveling to the Robco facility, ran around the corner looking for cover and stumbled onto an Outcast patrol. So I’ve got Vengeance at near full and it should stay there for a while so long as I only use it in Oh Shit! moments.

The oddest place I saw a gatling laser was upon exiting the Jury Street Metro station - a single Scavenger was taking on three Raiders and three Talon Company guys (who were presumably waiting for me) with a gatling laser. I sat back and watched, waited for him to get iced, then mopped up tout de suite.

Has anyone noticed just general stability issues with Fallout 3? Maybe once or twice a day, the whole thing will either just crash or it will freeze up and crash. The latter is more common, and sometimes, it’ll freeze up with no way of getting out of the program, at which point I have to hard-boot the PC.

I would get crashes sometimes, usually either immediately upon loading a save, or after fast-traveling to a location. Usually, even if it crashed on loading a save, multiple attempts to load that save would eventually get things going again pretty smoothly.

I recently downloaded and installed some mods, and as I kind of expected, there are more frequent crashes now.

This all reminds me of the first rule of CRPGs: save early, save often!

Never had any problems after upgrading my video card from an ATI 2400GT to a GeForce 8800GT, even with all settings on max. Until I added some mods.

Control-Alt-Delete and logging out then cancelling when it asks if I want to shut down my other applications works for me.

See, the Three Finger Salute doesn’t work for me in this situation. Very annoying. Still, my computer only takes a few minutes to be back up and running, and I just take it as a chance to get up and walk around. (See? It’s not a bug. It’s a FEATURE.)

No problems like you describe. The only issue I’ve had (except during the initial install) was due to the songs mod freezing my mouse…and I could always Alt-Tab out and then close the application and reload. And since I’ve taken that mod out I’ve had no further issues even there.

As Lute Skywatcher said, check your video drivers and make sure they are up to date. If you have an older video card you may want to consider upgrading it as well.

OK, I have been confronted with incontrovertible proof that I have been playing too much Fallout.; I present the following dream, which I just had while napping:

The dream starts off with me, my Mom(!?) and two other people who I don’t recognize but apparently I knew in Dreamworld. We’re excited because we’ve been invited to go see a new all-inclusive resort as it’s being built, some kind of enclosed dome or something. My Mom is driving (odd for a number of reasons, including that she rarely drives and the car that we’re in is nothing like any car my family has ever owned. Also, my Dad is nowhere to be seen, and there is no explanation or mention of this the entire dream…hmmmm…and in Fallout 3 the character is searching for Dad…). We’re being followed around by a car that, now that I think about it, looks like some sort of 50’s “futuristic” designs; it’s actually kind of a small car but has four occupants. The car is a convertible with the top down or off. I mention to my Mom that I think that the car is following us, and she does an abrupt u-turn (absolutely NONE of DreamMom’s actions line up with the real world Mom) and I look back to see that, for some reason, all four of the occupants of the chase car have gotten up and quickly changed seats, a kind of quick Chinese Fire Drill type situation. We lose the chase car and arrive at the facility.

We’re greeted by a woman wearing what looks suspiciously like a lab coat and she begins to show us around. (I’ll call her The Researcher) We see a large area being built that will have individual housing units, another large area that will serve as a cafeteria/mess hall, and an area that appears to be similar to a large gymnasium with several large poster beds, evenly spaced. A man guarding the door tells us that these will be the master suites, and I ask him if there will be walls between the beds for privacy, which he confirms. (Vault 1.0???)

Somewhere along the way, we all get separated, and I meet a woman, approximately mid-twenties, who appears confused and, at first, to be deaf and mute. I figure out that she can hear, but she can’t understand English. She seems disoriented and scared, so I decide to lead her to the Researcher. She doesn’t seem surprised to see the woman and asks me if it’s OK if I let her join our little “tour group” for a while. I consent, and throughout much of the rest of the day I try to teach her some words. She doesn’t speak but she can spell the words on paper or a chalkboard. At first she has trouble, but she then rapidly begins to learn, sometimes using words I haven’t tried to teach her yet. Hmmm…

Lunchtime arrives. The Researcher informs us that, sadly, the cafeteria is not yet functional, so we’ll have to go outside for lunch. We all pack into the car (this time with the new strange woman, but not with the Researcher) and drive off to find a restaurant. We’re followed again by the car with the four weirdos in it. Mom does the quick u-turn again and the other car stops and the people start their Chinese Fire Drill routine again…but this time I have jumped out of my car and into the driver’s seat of their car before they can get back in! Suddenly the people deflate-they were actually some sort of inflatable auto-pilot type things, and the car, not knowing what to do with a human in control, begins to spit out the remaining uninflated drivers from underneath the car. Weird!

There’s now a small crowd beginning to form around me, and I just get out of the car and begin walking back to the facility (thanks for waiting, Mom!) and along the way, I meet a mutt who seems especially friendly (Dogmeat 1.0???) For some reason, while walking along, I try calling out directions to the dog; “right, right, straight, left, straight,” etc., and the dog actually obeys! The Researcher has joined me in my walk somehow and she suggests I try commanding him mentally; I try a complex series of mental commands and the dog obeys! Wow!

We get back to the facility and I show everyone how the dog obeys my mental commands. The strange woman we met earlier now is progressing quite rapidly and I decide to test out her ability to figure out new words…I forget what word I try to test her on, but she surprises everyone by finally speaking! She sounds a bit awkward, like someone unused to hearing her own voice, but she says the words clearly. I mention this to the Researcher and she smiles and says “We knew it would only be a matter of time before they learned to speak!” They? Hmm, could it be…clones??

Finally we head to an observation tower, the highest point in the dome that affords us a clear view of all of the different facilities under construction, and I flat out ask the Researcher if what we’re looking at is Vault 1! She laughs and says they haven’t come up with a name for it yet, but somehow she thinks that Vault might sound too scary for the public…then I woke up.
