My replacement PS3 has hung once mid-gameplay, near the guys corpse where you pick up the “dead end” note. There is a cave/canyon where 3-5 random settlers/bugs/raiders are spawned, and after dying for the 3rd time, my new console froze just as I was rounding the corner to see what I would face this time.
The one I replaced was freezing over and over again. Neither behavior was triggered using map travel though.
Since the bodies of NPCs (whether alive or dead) seem to be re-rendered each time you enter a location, could a high volume of bodies cause problems in certain areas?
The Xbox crashed twice for me - once when it just wouldn’t get out of VATS and I didn’t have any AP to use to shoot anything, and almost once after I went up in level - it finally started going again, though. Had to restart it for the VATS thing, though.
Good question. I suppose they could potentially do it through a patch on XBox Live, but they haven’t done so yet.
The two crashes I remember were once after fast travelling from the World Map, and once for no apparent reason at all…I was walking down a random hall with no enemies in sight and the game locked. At least that time I’d “instanced” in only a minute before, so I had a recent autosave. The fast travel crash was a lot more annoying, as I hadn’t autosaved in some time and I had to start from some time before.
I just got to the Galaxy News station, following the PAladins and helping them known out the great big SOB with the mininuke. I’ll talk to a Paladin, all is fine, I walk upstairs - and suddenly they attack me. Or I take a wrong turn downstairs and bam, they go after me. Sometimes I get as far as talking to Three Dog, sometimes not.
Only time I ever had that happen to me was if I either tried to open something in the building (it’s nearly all red) or if when I was fighting I used an AOE attack that splashed on one of the Brotherhood guys.
Other than that I have no idea. Are you evil? I haven’t played an evil character so not sure how the Brotherhood would react to that.
Only thing I can think of is that you killed or hurt one of them with the mininuke, but 1) I think you’re allowed to, and 2) they should attack you outside already if that’s what’s triggering it.
Just got this over xmas and have been playing non-stop.
One little complaint though, it appears that there is no “view character” ability (on the 360 at least). I’m very fashion-obsessed with CRPGs, and after spending ridiculous amounts of time on my character’s face, hair, etc I’d like to have the ability to see them and rotate/zoom/pan in a “barbie doll” mode so I can see my cool duds and weapons. The crappy “external backside” camera mode doesn’t cut it.
Yeah they don’t have that on the PS3 either, that I’ve found, and I enjoyed that in Oblivion on the xbox 360. The only thing that works for me is to go dormant somewhere safe and then the camera will pan around you.
I walked out of Megaton once and the protectron droid catapulted up into the air. About 10 seconds later I saw it plummet to the ground about 50 feet away
I’ve been teasing Dogmeat by headshotting ghouls while he’s in mid leap. He flies through their bloody remains, lands growling and snarling trying to attack the bits, and then looks at me all confused. “Good boy,” I say.
I exited a metro passage into a terminal to the sounds of a serious firefight. I move and look down the tracks between two long trains of cars. At the far end about 100’ away, I see gatling laser fire streak past the train cars. Rocket launcher fire returns the other direction exploding everywhere. About 3x as much gatling laser fire then returns across the gap. Then a flurry of rockets return from the other side, ground shaking with explosions. After about 6 intense flurry exchanges between whoever the hell these people were, all is silent. My character thinks to herself, “Screw that, I am not going that way! Let’s go Dogmeat!” and walks back down the steps into the tunnels.
I was walking in DC when all of a sudden I was surrounded by about 6 super mutants packing miniguns and other heavy weapons. I squealed and ran, dodging bullets, leaping girders, getting pummeled. A couple of cars in front of me burst into flames from the stray bullets. I ran and leaped over them, hoping for any sort of cover down the street and putting them in between me and the mutants. I knelt around the corner of a building to see if they were following. Wait, where’s Dogmeat?..I then see Dogmeat run around the flaming cars with the supermuties following, spraying the air with bullets. Just then, the cars explode into the air, Dogmeat silhouetted against the fireball as he runs toward me, and mutants fly into the air in all directions. After the cars crashed to the ground, all was silent, and I went to sniff the carnage. Mutie parts everywhere, and tons of loot. All in all, a profitable day in the city. “Let’s go Dogmeat!”
I had something similar. Two raider’s “ambush” me. (Not really, I could see them in my radar.) Both are slug throwers. The one closer to me is aiming at me. The farther one is trying to hit the dog. However, he hits a car instead. At this point Dogmeat has already run off. Kaboom goes the car. It flies up in the air, flips over, and lands on the raider closest to me, the one engaged in melee with Dogmeat, crushing her right after I come out of VATS with a head critical to the other one. “Nooooooooooo!!!” I scream in my head, having seen Dogmeat die a couple times before when he took on more than he could chew. (E.g. Mirlurks, which he can’t hit the face of.)
But wait, out of the rubble and flames comes Dogmeat acting all nonchalant like fireball cars practically smashing you to a pancake is something one sees everyday.
Oh, and to see the front of your character, hold down the left bumber on the 360 while you move the right analog stick (or whichever stick moves the camera) while in 3rd person view.
I assume a similar method is employed in PS3 and Windows.
On the PC you can toggle between 1st and 3rd person views with a middle-click. In 3rd person, zoom with the scrollwheel and hold the middle button and use the mouse to pan around your character. Great for looking around corners. There’s a free camera mode too, but I can’t remember how to access it. I think it’s a console command.
The camera goes into the passive “fly around” mode like Oblivion does, but it still isn’t controllable or zoomable (like the Oblivion inventory mode is). So I can trial-and-error wedging my character into a corner and waiting for the fly around, but it’s irritating.
I got that too once. I went looking around after the big battle, and ended up going out onto one of the balconies overlooking the plaza. The BoS guards immediately went hostile, so I ran back inside, where everything was nice and friendly again.
The door to the balcony wasn’t red, so I loaded an older save and tested a bit more. They were only hostile to me after going through that door. I believe there’s some trespassing flag or summat you trigger when opening that door.
PC version. Just leave your character standing there. After a few minutes the screen goes to camera fly mode and starts panning around you. You can change weapons while the camera is moving so you can see what they look like in use.
ETA: I see that was answered a few times. Oh well. I tried
