Fallout lovers

Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics have been released on one DVD. I found it at walmart while browsing the PC game section. If this is old news sorry but I don’t remember seeing a thread about it.

Did they happen to update them to make them a bit more windows friendly?

I saw the individual DVD re-releases of each game the other day, which said in fairly prominent type on the back:

THIS GAME IS COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS VISTA

So I would say the answer is “Yes”- but Vista is a bit temperamental and just because it works on Your Vista machine doesn’t mean it will work on your friend’s Vista machine…

All I can tell you is the system requirements says for WIN 98/2000/ME/XP.

IIRC, Fallout 1 won’t run under windows 2000/XP and requires dosbox. I can’t remember if FO2 needs any tricks to run.

www.gog.com is a lovely place where Fallout is 5.99, Fallout 2 is 5.99, and Fallout Tactics is 5.99. It’s completely legal and licensed, it runs under XP or Vista, with no tricks, comes with soundtracks, manuals, keyboard maps, a Fallout Bible of ‘why does this do that’ and cut bits, and little avatars to use on forums. Oh. And no DRM at all.

Same people who wrote The Witcher.

Lots of great stuff there. Share and enjoy.

I wonder if it’s possible for any group to remake Fallout 1 and 2 using Fallout 3’s engine.

Last fall, I installed both Fallout 1 and 2 in XP, and I don’t think I had to do anything special with either. At most, and I don’t even remember doing this, I would’ve had to right click, select properties, and make sure it was running in compatibility mode for Windows 98.

For Fallout 1, the disc has both DOS and Windows (95/98) versions on the same disc. Just make sure to install the Windows version and then no DOSbox is needed.

IIRC, Fallout 2 was Windows only so you don’t even have to worry about which version to install.

These are with the original releases of each, I have no idea if changes could have occurred with the versions in this compilation. But if the changes made them less compatible with modern OSes, that would be a real mindblower. I don’t have any version of Tactics, so I can’t comment on that at all.

I have Tactics loaded up on my computer and it works fine in Vista.

If you edit the config files to look just for the Fallout root folders, then you can have it just as a folder that you can put anywhere. I keep the installed version of the game, with variant versions for different fan patches and mods, archived so I can just drag it to my desktop from the DVD to play anytime I feel like it.
