I’m not quite up to speed on what the general way of dealing with spoilers is, so I’ll just say: be warned. If you are viewing this thread expect spoilers. If you are going to spoil something please use the spoiler tag. On the other hand I think it’s ok for ‘mild’ spoilers not to be tagged. Just do what you think is right and respectful to others.
Anyway…
Despite the NPC lag affecting the PC version, and some other things (I won’t discuss them yet) I am loving this game. I’m up to level 15 so far.
I’ll leave it at that. Just wanted to get this thread started.
Just wanted to join the thread. Currently I’m level 19th and just started doing some of the actual New Vegas quests. Oh…and totally loving the game. Can’t wait for the first good mods and DLCs to come out.
I’m beginning to think the fact there are more weapons might be a disadvantage. In FO3 I could maintain a small group of preferred weapons by picking up identical ones from dead enemies. But so far in FO3 I have an almost random collection of weapons that can’t be used to repair others because they are too different. In FO3 there were two plasma-based weapons (if you don’t count one-offs). So far in FONV I have like four different plasma weapons that I am too scared to use because all of them are nearly broken. And I can’t use any one of them to repair any other.
In FO3 I eventually almost totally used the plasma rifle. I’m wondering if in FONV I might end up having a ‘conventional’ weapon as my weapon of choice. (I am kind of bored with creating goo/ash piles as opposed to watching bodies flail about )
Well, if you are into crafting you can always build weapon repair kits. I generally buy them whenever I see a vendor who has one, as that seems easier. Probably why I don’t have boatloads of caps like others in the other thread though, since I buy every stimpak and repair kit I can get my hands on, as well as purified water whenever I can.
As to energy weapons, I’ve found the laser Tommy Gun works best for me so far, and I’ve got quite a few of them taken off folks who don’t need them anymore. I wish I could find more dead NCR soldiers, since it would be nice to have more service rifles since I have tons of rounds for them.
My weapon of choice in FO3 was the Gauss Rifle from OA (once I modded the game to allow me to repair it). That was by far the heaviest hitting weapon that wasn’t a nuke, and I seriously hope there will be one (repairable) laying about in NV somewhere as well.
Jury Rigger perk fixes this, but of course that requires 90 Repair skill. If you can bother with making a bunch of Weapon Repair Kits then you might get by with 50 Repair.
Had my first annoying bug - finished “I Could Make You Care” and after the last encounter the quest-giver just stood there and stopped following me. Did the last part again and she got un-bugged, but if I hadn’t made a normal save 15 min prior I would have been screwed, since both my auto and quick saves were after she got bugged. If I would’ve had to choose between losing her or losing several hours of play I would’ve been pretty mad.
I just sold one 30 minutes ago for like 2k, think it was at 60-70% condition when I cough acquired it. Got 100 Guns skill and 15 Energy Weapons so I’m not bothering with any of them.
ETA – with Jury Rigger perk it was repairable with Plasma Guns.
I have him as one of my followers, since the Ed-E My Love quest seems to be broken in my game and I can’t complete it. He’s pretty useful, if for nothing else than to be a nice pack mule.
What level is Jury Rigger available, or is it just when you have 90 to repair? I think my repair is at 85 atm, so might be worth it for me to bump that up and take the perk (was going to go with the Grim Reaper one next, but Jury Rigger sounds like something I could definitely use).
The first time through I’ve pumped most of my skill points into speech so I can see as many story lines as possible. I like to make decisions in RPG’s based on what I would do in that situation so for the most part I’m often good. Morality isn’t so clear in New Vegas and I really like that. Since I also want to see as many story lines as possible I have to be a bastard too…kinda feel bad about putting one in Doc and Sunny’s skull…
If you haven’t done it yet, wait until you have to rat out Cass and throw her under the bus. That was pretty grim…but worth a couple hundred caps plus a nice bit of XP.
In FO3 I think my quickest rising skill was repair. In this it seems to be barter. I have a habit of collecting stuff and selling it so I wanted my barter skill to be high early. I don’t think I had anywhere near 8000 caps when I was at 14/15 in FO3, but in FONV I do.
Ironically one of the skills I’ve been neglecting in this is the repair skill. I seemed to be able to repair stuff up to full condition with my 20 repair skill so I never bothered to add anything to it when levelling up. But if you need 90 for the jury rigger perk then I might get on the task of upping the repair skill.
Were skill magazines a part of FO3? If they were I don’t think I ever used them. There have been many points so far in FONV where they’ve been almost vital.
And I haven’t encountered a single skill book yet! I think in FO3 all my S.P.E.C.I.A.L. numbers were at maximum towards the end. For that reason I’ve been avoiding using the perk that adds one to one of your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. skills on the basis that I might not need it (I might achieve the same by finding skill books that add to your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. skills.
I’ve also found a Big Book of Science and a couple of other books for permanent skills increases…just not as many of them as in FO3.
If I ever re-roll another character (which I almost certainly will), I’m going to go with speech and barter as early tagged skills, since they come in pretty handy throughout the game. Maybe explosives too, since again that seems to come in pretty handy.
Does anyone know if you can take your skills past 100 in the game?
I like the multiple weapons in disrepair. It helps the post-apocalyptic image (granted, it’s about 100 years later). I like that the weapons are much more realistic and less fantasy-base (energy weapons aside).
There is. One I found was:
In a place called Beer Brewer’s Shack or something along that lines. West of New Vegas. Beware, I was ambushed by Cazadors as soon as I left.
They remind me of those old popups that when you tried to get rid of them (by clicking the x) they’d move to another part of the screen as soon as your mouse pointer got near them.
