Didn’t see a thread on this and I know it’s supposed to be out early next week on Steam (I assume they will let folks who pre-ordered the game download it over the weekend and activate it when the game officially launches). It looks much the same as Fallout 3 which, to be honest is fine with me…I liked Fallout 3 and still fire it up, so if this is more of the same I’m good with that. From the videos I’ve seen there are some new guns, new creatures (well, what looks like the Golden Geckos from earlier games at least and some new robots and such), and an area supposedly similar in size to the Capital Wasteland from FO3.
I’m not sure how mods will work using Steam (I bought FO3 on traditional CD), but I’m guessing DLCs will be easier to buy and load since I’m sure they will come straight from Steam. I guess that you won’t be able to run the equivalent of the Fallout Mod Manager, which might make loading the mod order a bit of a trial.
Anyway, any other 'dopers planning to get the game when it ships? Anyone else looking forward to it?
I guess, but it seems kinda weird that some of the add-ons to the Fallout 3 have more of a original feel then this new game (though I’m only going by the few screen shots I’ve seen of Vegas, so maybe this isn’t the case).
Still, I like the idea of the “Hardcore mode”. My main complaint from Fallout 3 was that after you’d leveled a few times, there wasn’t really any challenge left. The most fun part of that game was trying to get to the radio station while my character was still relatively weak and getting through Capital City felt like an accomplishment.
I really hope the “evil” path is more fleshed out than Fallout 3 was. I was a complete dick in that game, sided with the bad guys every time, nuked Megaton, etc, and was forced by dear old dad to save the world. Hey dad, I don’t want to save the freakin’ world, ok? Just get off my back!
I’m just hoping I can get my personal vault mod back…that was really cool. I loved the weapons wall and the armor stands to display all the armor sets I had collected.
I’m feeling a bit chilled, and think I might be coming down with something next week…
I want it to be more of the same. That’s why I am looking forward to it.
If they’ve fucked it up in some way (as seems to happen these days with PC games) I shall be displeased.
Me too (at the same time as Medal of Honor)
ETA: Does anyone know/seen any online literature to indicate what the size of this game will be compared to FO3? I can’t shake the feeling that it will be smaller. I think it’s because I keep thinking of it as DLC even though I know it’s a full game.
I remember reading a preview that stated it was the same size game as Fallout 3 (obviously without the DLCs that were added on later)…same map size (aprox) as the Capital Wasteland, same amount of content. I’ll see if I can dig up the preview later.
I’m actually glad that this will be a whole new character, since all of my Fallout 3 characters are so ridiculously buff that they could kill just about anything with a spoon and a pair of chopsticks.
Yeah, those hillbillies were pretty tough, as were those nasty undead thingies. But I went back with one of my characters after I finished Zeta and wiped the floor even with the nasty undead guys there. The Gauss rifle alone (let alone some of the alien weapons you get from the mothership) were pretty ridiculous, going back.
I’m heartily disappointed that the new character isn’t another Vault Dweller. I just don’t get tired of the concept of a person emerging from isolation into an unknown world and just kicking incredible amounts of ass all over the place. A wastelander just doesn’t have that same punch, IMO.
I won’t be buying it just yet (hell, I’m still working on my first playthrough of FO3), but I do intend to play it eventually.
I wonder if they will put in the Steam feature in Civ IV…the ability to save games to the Steam Cloud. THAT would be pretty cool, since it allows me to save games from my PC at home to the cloud then load them when I’m on the road with my laptop.
I can play Civ IV without being connected to the internet, though…you just can’t access your saved games if you aren’t connected (what I generally do is prep the laptop before a trip by loading a saved game from the cloud, then saving it to the laptop…that way I can play on the plane). It’s a pretty cool feature and I really hope they put it into FONV, as it will make the game much more playable for me (you can copy and paste the saved games manually, but it’s more of a pain in the ass to do it that way).
I’m really looking forward to the weapons mods built into the game and hardcore mode. Just really psyked about the game in general, since Obsidian is doing it, as supposedly they are folding in a lot of elements from the first two games.
Can’t wait either…I still played FO3 up until last week. i went to every site on the map and cleared every single plate, damages books, forks, spoons etc…every single thing you can think of picking up I picked up and sold it to whomever i could sell it too. I’m already done with DR2, so Fallout Vegas will be coming out just in time.
I’m still trying to decide whether to preorder. I really liked Fallout 3, and even picked up the game of the year edition with all the DLC. The thing is, I haven’t even finished Broken Steel yet because my Steam library is overflowing with new and even unplayed games.
I was rather annoyed by the DLC monsters and their “deals an extra 40 damage that bypasses all armor” attacks. It’s a lazy and fun-killing way to try to introduce challenge to the high levels. Rather than go the “armor is useless against these attacks” route, they should have instead gone the “powered armor is absolutely essential against these attacks, and even then you’ll still take moderate damage” route.
I’m taking more of a “wait-and-see” approach to New Vegas as it’s being done by Obsidian, who are renown for making buggy, incomplete games and I can’t play it on a PC where the modding community would be able to, you know, actually finish the job that the professional devs were supposed to do. I simply don’t trust Obsidian enough to buy their games first day, and i’m not sure i trust them enough to buy the console version at all.
