The same Republicans that condemned him will now thank and praise him for stopping this…much the way a battered spouse thanks her/his spouse for stopping the beating.
The “unusual activity” consists of several of the girls being clandestinely herded into cars at about 1:00 AM, several of them with heads covered to conceal their faces.
Yup. See, we need to be sympathetic to those poor Republicans because they’ve suffered more than those children put in different concentration camps than their parents.
Well Trump just said he intends to sign an executive order which will keep families together in detention. I wonder who is going to sue to block this first?
Yes, that is the plan. To violate a 1997 law which limits detention to 20 days, get sued, then complain that the “liberal judge” is soft on immigration.
My bet is he’ll do what the article says and say the “liberal judge” wants to keep children separated from their families.
They actualy spelled “separation” wrong in the name of the executive order.
An unusually perfect mnemonic to help always spell it right: Separation has “a rat” in it.
(Never more so than now.)
Hey, not to worry; I’m sure all those infants and toddlers will be ever so much better off in the wonderful homes their buyers on the adoption black market will give them.
At least the healthy, attractive, salable ones.
Uh … define “droves”? According to Gallup Trump’s approval rating of 45% last week is as high as it’s ever been, tieing the record set the week of his inauguration. (An optimistic note is that, I think, the “Don’t Know” cohort is smaller now.)
Predictwise’s estimate of the chance for a Democratic Speaker of the 2019 House of Representatives, which reached a high of 69% on April 14th, was 56% on June 5th and has now recovered to 60%.
No effect. Trump’s approval isn’t budging in the short term and long term it’s actually a bit higher than his average over the last year or so. Republicans won’t abandon him over it and Democrats aren’t any more energized. Independents seem put off but also don’t support the alternative(catch and release).
I predict this a zillion other things will happen between now and Nov which will absolutely bury this issue. Hell, I doubt it will talked about a month from now.
Yes, there will be more fresh hell from these people in the months to come, that’s a safe assumption. It won’t be these current atrocities that dominate attitudes and turnouts on Election Day, but the accumulated effect of all of them.
They’re talking about cutting Social Security and Medicare now, calling their refusal to provide an adequate tax base “responsible”. Let them start campaigning on that, or defending questions about it, and *that *is going to close the deal for more voters.
I know anecdote doesn’t equal data, but my wife, whom I’ve been nagging for more than 15 years to vote, is going to vote for the first time ever. She was in tears just trying to talk about the separations.
I love hearing about that stuff anyway. This controversy has definitely angered a lot of formerly disinterested people. But if their anger is uninformed, as in they don’t understand why this is being done and the alternatives, then it won’t really do much good. A lot of people are good at complaining about policies without advocating solutions. Or even making a hard decision, like “Let’s not make it illegal to cross the border.”
More accurately, your wife, five months before the election and just after a major scandal SAYS that she will be voting in the election this fall. Five months in electoral politics is an eternity.
To put it in perspective, in the last five months, Trump’s speechwriter resigned after beating up his wife. Trump’s staff secretary resigned after beating up two ex-wives, Stormy Daniels happened, Michael Cohen was arrested, the chief of the Forest Service resigned after sexually harassing and retaliating against employees, the top aide to the EPA head resigned after discovering that he had a lifetime ban from banking due to financial misconduct, the VA secretary forged emails in order to get his wife free travel, 13 Russians were arrested for fraud in their attempt to get Trump elected, Trump admitted making up the false statement that Trump Jr. put out regarding Russian contacts, Trump’s lawyer said that the Russian mess would be cleaned up simply by Trump pardoning everyone, we have withdrawn from the UN Human Rights Council, we have started two trade wars, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a ton more.
Bottom line is that this is just another blip in the Presidency of a horrible person and it will have minimal effect on November.
And the bulk of them vote for Republicans.
Make sure, however gently or sternly it takes, that she registers and follows through.
On immigration, the Republicans have made the tough decisions: they are willing to hurt a lot of people. Democrats, by contrast, want to do no harm, but in immigration, there’s no way to do no harm. All policies lead to people getting hurt. So all Democrats do is protest the harm, but propose no hard solutions. They won’t even say directly that they demand catch and release.
Sure there is: “Enter the country, pass a citizenship test and background check, and you’re given a visa immediately and become a citizen after three years of committing no crimes. This applies to all existing undocumented immigrants.”
The bottom line of the “immigration debate” is pure, unmitigated racism. There is no “harm” to be mitigated, except in the eyes of folks who don’t see these people as people. Study after study after study shows that they’re not harming our labor market or economy. We’re spending all this money solving a non-problem. I know the GOP supporters hate it when we attribute all of their actions to racism, but I’m still waiting for them to offer a non-racist definition of the “harm” these immigrants are causing.
For those outraged and concerned for the welfare of the Mexicans trying to illegally cross the border, perhaps better border security and more barriers would prevent this type of detention.
