Family Feud Games: Possible Questions Thread

I’ve been enjoying the Family Feud games that have been making the rounds of MPSIMS lately, and I appreciate the time and effort their creators have put into them. But the following post by twickster over in this game thread got me thinking:

Although, as I said, I’ve enjoyed the games so far, there have been a few times I’ve felt this way too. Not about the Simpsons, in my case, but about other pop-culture items I’ve never seen/read/heard of. (For example, what is a “Usual Suspect” if not a minor player in the film Casablanca?) I can certainly understand specificity in themed games, such as the recent military history and music ones; but in general games, perhaps we should avoid pop-culture specifics, and tend towards surveys and answers that anyone could give.

What I propose for this thread, then, is a list of questions that Feud game constructors can use if they find themselves needing general survey questions. The survey subjects should be broad enough and/or well-known enough that anybody can offer a reasonable answer. I’ll begin with the following (do not answer these; these could be for future use):

– Name an American newspaper.
– What time do you usually sit down to eat dinner?
– Name a breed of dog.
– Name a sport/event at the Winter Olympics.
– Name a kind of tree.
– On what day of the week do you usually buy groceries?
– Name a non-American car manufacturer.
– Name a high school subject.
– Name one of Shakespeare’s plays.

Get the idea? What other general knowledge surveys can we come up with for future games?

well, heck, Spoons. Come up with one more question, and host the next game when the current one is finished. I mean - those are pretty good questions you’ve got there so far.

OK, here are a few (I haven’t seen every game played here so far, so apologies if there are any repeats):

Name a US state that has fewer than 1 million residents.

What color was your first car?

Name a mammal native to South America.

Name an airline that currently makes transatlantic flights.

Name a deceased entertainer known mainly for stand-up comedy.

Name a type of neck on a sweater.

Name a popular song that mentions a dog or dogs in the title.

Name a popular British sitcom from the 1960s.

Name a country ending in “stan”.

At what age do you consider someone to be ‘old’?

Where do you keep your car keys when you are at home?

Name a brand of toothpaste.

Name an author best known for writing novels about espionage.

Thanks! But while I enjoy the games, I don’t really have the time to keep checking back, counting entries, and tabulating and scoring the results. But if you’d like to use these questions, anyrose, feel free to use them. Here, I’ll even give you one more:

– Name a type (not brand) of carbonated soft drink.

And, El_Kabong, you’ve got some good ones there too!

Name a fruit tree that comes in two genders.

Name a mollusk.

I’ll add a few more too:

– Name a holiday which you absolutely must spend with family.
– Other than prescription drugs, name something you might buy at a drugstore.
– Name a landlocked country.
– Name a condiment you might put on a burger.
– Name a regular feature you would find every day in the newspaper.

Other than cats or dogs, name an animal kept as a pet.
Other than balloons what might one inflate?

Name a warship.
Name a cruise ship.

Name a company that makes underwear.

Name a car that was commonly viewed as dangerous.

Name a Crayola crayon color.

Name a famous sex industry worker other than a porn star.

While I think of some, I assume that you want questions for all purposes? (That is, questions that are general enough to have up to six statistically significant answers, usually used in the first couple of rounds of the “real” Family Feud, vs. ones that have only three, maybe four top answers, usually used in the Triple and bonus rounds?)

Yes, like you state here. As well, keep them general too–don’t get so specific such that unless you’ve seen a certain film or TV show, or read a certain play or book, you cannot answer. Create a question that any reasonably intelligent person could come up with a reasonable answer to.

Couple of examples might help illustrate:

BAD: Name a character in “Goodfellas.” This one is too specific; it cannot be answered unless you have seen the film.

GOOD: Name a movie about organized crime. Now, “Goodfellas” is a possible response, but so is any “Godfather” movie, “Scarface,” “The Untouchables,” etc.

BAD: Name any country that has won at least one gold medal in hockey at the Winter Olympics. Let’s face it, unless you’re in Canada or Russia, you’re probably more interested in other events at the Winter Olympics. So…

GOOD: Name an event at the Winter Olympics. Now, you can answer with hockey–or downhill skiing, ski jumpiing, figure skating, etc.

See what we’re looking for?

And my own personal gripe.

Please remember with questions that there is a world that does exist outside the USA

It may make question setting harder, but means those people who are not US resident have a chance.

Name a large body of water.
Name a continent.
Other than Washington, DC, name any country’s capital.
Name a small breed of dog.
Name an art form.
Name a brand of toilet paper.
Name a popular cocktail.

Name a popular brand of vodka.

Name an invention that many believe changed the world.

Name a type of disaster that could wipe out humanity.

Other than World Wars I and II, name a war that was fought in the twentieth century.

Name a European currency that has been replaced by the Euro.

Name a technology for playing back recorded sounds that is generally considered obsolete.

Name a large oil and gas company.

How many times a year does the average person get the oil changed on their car?

What’s the average age of a typical airline’s fleet?

Name an Asian seaport.

Name a poular song with nonsense words in the title.

A quick question for all.

Given the number of people answering after the usual limit of 50, is it worth changing it to be time specific so that all answers in before a deadline will be accepted. This is considering that the last couple of games haven’t last much longer than a day before all the places have gone.

Also, do people prefer to play a vanilla game or with a catch?

I love to play these games (usually :)) even though I don’t do very well at them!! CatInASuit, I thought your last couple of games were quite good, btw, esp. the food glorious food one. Even though -no-one- else picked tarragon as the herb used in food!!! And I liked the Joker twist - neat idea (just wish that I’d read the instructions more carefully! LOL).

I don’t really have any question suggestions, except maybe a World Geography edition? It would probably have to be pretty general though!

Name a knot. (you know, Boy Scout, nautical, etc.)

Name a mythical place. (can probably be narrowed down some, e.g., a mythical paradise or kingdom or something.)

Name a kind of bean.

Name a popular computer game.

Name something you put on a hamburger.
Name a non-American actor who has won an Academy Award.
Name a famous game-show host.
Name a variety (not brand) of wine.
Name a branch of mathematics.
Name a world boxing champion.
Name a monster movie.
Besides burgers, name something you’d order at a fast-food restaurant.
Name a non-American beer.
