Family Get-Togethers - A Holiday-ish MMP

I got all my work done. I’m such a good boy! Now I can concentrate on dindin with Shadow! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!

It’s true I didn’t belch, or wipe my mouth on my sleeve, or loosen my belt,or scratch in indelicate places when I had dinner with Mooooom. However, she has no idea whether or not I would’ve wiped my mouth on the tablecloth or used it as a bib cause Whitey’s does not have tablecloths.

Ok, Ima go purtify for my date with Shadow. YAAAAAAY!!!

snowbunny maybe I’ll visit Idaho one day. In summer. Snow does not agree with lil’ ol’ southern me.

I’ve had a bunch of eye exams given by everything from Wal-Mart level opticians on up to Fellows of Opthalmology, and I’ve never had a glaucoma test done with anything blue. Of course, it could be brand new - everyone seems to have a fascination with putting bright blue LEDs into everything now, and it’s been a year since anyone’s looked into my eyes.

The typical test is the “puffer” - it’s widely used because it’s quick and non-contact. Accuracy is “good enough” to be used for screening. If your opthalmologist really wants to check properly, they’ll administer anaesthetic drops then touch your eyes with a device called a Tonopen. That’s the “gold standard” way to test, but it’s not often done because it takes longer, has to be administered by a doctor, rather than a clerk in the doctor’s office, and the instrument needs to be sterilized (or at least cleaned) between uses.

The bright blue light - that was probably a slit-lamp microscope exam.

All I know is that when I turned 41, I went to the Gyne, the ophthalmologist, the endrocrinologist, the podiatrist and the dermatologist.

Basically, getting old sucks.

Gyne-girlie bits check out, but 'ware menopause! (not happening yet)

eye doctor woman (she’s about 12): you need reading glasses-get them at Walgreen’s or similar. I’ll give you a Rx for them, in case you want bifocals. If you go with bifocals, go with the hard line(?) so that when you go into trifocals, your eyes will be trained. Oh, snap!
endocrinologist: vitiligo is worse. Hypothyroid is status quo.

podiatrist: ya got bone spurs–here, have some very expensive orthotics that insurance will not pay for.

dermatologist: vitiligo is worse. And you have adult acne!

I’m still reeling from it all, 4 years later. I’m sure I got the glaucoma thingy, as well as everything else. Never had blue stuff, though.

I get whatever the fanciest glaucoma test is every year since both my dad and my grandmother had severe glaucoma. My grandmother had it back in the ooooold days when they didn’t really understand how to lower eye pressure properly, and so one thing they did to treat it was – TMI alert –

to pull out all her teeth!

I told the doctor that last year when I had my eyes checked and he was horrified. He’d heard about such horror stories from back in the Dark Ages, but to meet someone who could verify it had really happened freaked him out.

Anyway, we ended up with more snow than you, FCM – we got a couple inches, although it didn’t stick much to the roads. There was enough, however, for the dogs to go out and have a wonderful romp in it – the back yard now has its traditional snowy look, i.e. like a herd of elephants danced the tango all over it. The Idiots do love a good snowfall. I just hope the roads don’t freeze too badly tonight, since Papa Tigs drives to work before dawn and if it’s going to be nasty, that’s the time of day it happens.

Is it bedtime yet? I have done absolutely nothing today and now all I want to do is crawl in bed. Of course, the fact that Rusty got me up 2 hours earlier than usual might have something to do with that. Oh well, I’ll be a good girl for a bit this evening; I have a job that’s due tomorrow, and I don’t want to end up under a time crunch.

I am lucky, I guess.
I have arthritis just about everywhere, and a related or causal mixed connective tissue disorder. I’ve always worn glasses, so that’s nothing new. But I do not have any heart problems, no high bp, no diabetes, no issues with my internals and I still have all my own teeth. I just can’t walk, or bend, or turn my head, or grasp heavy things, or climb stairs (kvetch, kvetch, kvetch)

Many thanks for the “prayers” and the prayers re the driving. We weren’t gone long; #1 son has a ton of homework and I had to make dinner. Basically, I wanted him out there with patches of black ice and to see how the main streets can be fine, but the side roads can be dicey. He did ok. I think he’ll be a good driver, eventually.

And I made him back up our 500ft driveway, which he did fine (except for I had to tell him to turn his head around and look out the rear window).

Quiche is eaten and was very good, if I do say so myself! I plan on wasting time tonight, and concentrating on my last 2 assignments over the weekend. Blech. Almost done.

Speaking of sons driving, I found out to my combined amusement/horror that my son has himself a part-time job now that he’s out of the Air Force while he’s going to school (to avoid having to use his GI Bill benefits for undergrad, he’s working and getting student loans) – you’ll probably keel over laughing at this, too, snowbunny – he’s working as a delivery driver for a sandwich shop! This is a kid who didn’t even get his license until two years ago or so, because he took driver’s ed when we lived in Maryland before, and between the REALLY scary woman he had once at his driving school (Angel, who was a raging bitch; I banned her from ever teaching him the on-the-road part again, but it was too late, alas) and driving in D.C. traffic, he was so freaked he would have nothing to do with it for several more years. Even though we all thought he was a really good driver at that point. Go figure.

I’m still not working. Boo me.

<sad sigh> I just remembered, today would have been my dad’s 90th birthday.

Sorry about your Dad, rosie. Those are sad anniversaries, aren’t they?

The other place you could look for a cheaper eye exam is at a university, Hank. You’d think there a college of optometry at one of the educational institutions located in Chicago. I was also going to suggest someplace like Sears or WalMart for a cheap exam and glasses. You might also want to ask friends/colleagues where they’ve gotten glasses.

My optometrist also uses something with a blue light for the glaucoma test. They haven’t used a puffer test in that office for a while, IIRC. My doctor says that my risk of retinal tears is increased because of my extreme nearsightedness, so I should get my eyes dilated every year. She found a tiny hole in my retina a while back (maybe 2001). She sent me off to an ophthalmologist to have it sealed. I got my eyes dilated 4 or 5 times that year, between my regular eye exam, the laser surgery to seal the hole, and two or three follow-ups. It’s never bothered me much since then.

Thanks for the explanation, SO. That commentary got me to thinking about how commercial and secular Christmas is in the U.S. and I wondered if something similar had happened in Israel. How about Moslem holidays, Dotty? (It’s cool to be able to get answers to these types of questions, by the way.)

Sorry about the stress at work, taxi. Hope it subsides soon.

I’m really sleepy, so I think I’ll crawl into bed and come back and write something more coherent in the morning.

Hope swampy and Shadow are having a nice dinner.

Hmmmm almost Thursday.

GT

The accident demons jumped the gun today, it happened 30 minutes before I drove past(fender bender). the doc says I’ll live.

Yay snowbunny!!

{{{{rosie}}}}

I hope Shadow remembered her camera!

Haze, my left eye is worsr than my right.

rigs, comgrats with finishing the class.

Hugs to everyone else!

There is a school of dentistry around here that has a similar benefit. You can get free exams and cavities filled for incredibly cheap as long as you are willing to let a student take a drill to your face.

I am officially graduated! It’s a year’s worth of procrastinating late, but none the less as of this Saturday I will be 100% graduated. I even got a text message from my dad congratulating me.

Next step grad school.

On another note I got into a car accident last Friday. I was driving up to see Meli (and for the first time ever I was going to be early) when someone pulled out of a parking lot into the road in front of me. I don’t know what the guy was thinking, it wasn’t as if I was the only car on the road, the street was packed and I was just unlucky enough to be the one that hit him. Luckily I slammed on the breaks and was able to slow down enough to prevent any injury (I hit him right in the driver side door and his car was not new enough to have side airbags) but I am fairly certain his car was totaled and mine has a fair amount of cosmetic damage on the front passenger side (Meli has a picture I am sure she can post). My car is still drivable, which is good since I do not have rental insurance, but as I was not at fault I do not have to pay for any repairs.

Hey, he’s got a job. I’m not going to laugh – much, anyway. I thought his driving was fine; he drove me around a bit while I was there, on my way here. He wasn’t terribly amused when I pointed out that it was about time he drove me around for a change, since I was his chauffeur for years.

They always check me for glaucoma because of the family history thing; I’ve had both the puff test and the fancier one. I actually prefer the fancier one because I hate the puff of air, but whatever. Better safe than sorry, though. (They did WHAT to Grandmother???) My eyes are weird, my left eye is a lot worse than my right. My theory is that I got one from each parent, since MT wears some serious glasses, and my dad had perfect vision.

The Idiots would have been in heaven here Monday. It was pretty funny watching a now-mostly-grown dachshund pup in the backyard at the shop bouncing in the snow. It went over her head! For some reason almost all dogs seem to looooove snow. I knew one that didn’t, but he was a Basenji, so it made perfect sense that he hated it.

Hazel–I just thought of something–there’s the Illinois School/College of Optometry downtown somewhere–they give out cheap to free exams. Google 'em!

 Two of my cousins are training to be dentists. The thought of them taking a drill to my face … let’s just say it doesn’t make me comfortable.

Congrats on graduating! And consolations ahead of time on starting grad school.

Ohh, thanks rigs! That sounds awesome. :: scurries off to google ::

:: hugs for rosie ::

The blue light glaucoma test, is I believe, a laser. It measures the internal pressure, which is what glaucoma is. I haven’t been puffed in the eye in about 5 years or so. They give you drops first to deaden the eye, then they put the blue light thingee actually to where it touches your eye just lightly. You don’t feel it because the surface of your eye is numb. It’s supposed to be much more accurate than the puff.

And so ends ends today, which started at 3 this morning. I have beer, I have book.

'Night.

haze: try this instead… ILColOpt&UofC
At any rate, I think you should CALL these places and ask for the exams that the students give (their work is checked by a qualified person)–sometimes the web sites don’t have the greatest info. Good luck.

{{{Rosie}}} Those anniversary things can be tough.

I said bye to Shadow a few minutes ago. She did bring her camera and we got our waiter to take pics. She’ll post 'em when she gets around to it or home, whichever comes first. Keep yer shirts on people. It was a lot of fun! We talked and laughed and hugged and talked and laughed and hugged and talked and laughed and when it was all over we hugged some more. Shadow is a sweetheart and y’all should all make special trips to the Sillycone Valley just to see her. She also has enough leftover pasta to start her own Eyetalian restaurant. That was one hyuuuuuuuuge bowl of pasta. Plus we talked and laughed and hugged a lot in case I forgot to mention it.

Yeah, I should call them. The web sites don’t have much.

I was on facebook and just saw that a few of the girls I knew from grad school were visiting Chicago last weekend. And they never let me know! :frowning: Ah well. I think they were having a precept reunion; their precept was always rather clique-ish. I was amused to see that everyone in their photos was either part of their precept or an SO … except this one guy, who ALWAYS NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED in every single social event or else he feels left out. I feel kind of bad for him because I know that a lot of people from that precept don’t think well of him at all (there was this whole drama with one of the girls … isn’t there always?). It’s too bad I didn’t get to see the girls - we were somewhere between friends and acquaintances during grad school; got along well enough - but if there’s one thing I hate it’s being with a group of people where I feel like an outsider (not that they ever did that on purpose, but the vibe was there). I think Mr. Imustalwaysbeincluded is never quite able to sense those vibes. That would explain how he was able to chase so doggedly after Scottish Darling when she obviously felt incredibly uncomfortable around him but was too polite to say so.

I made you a post, but it eated it. :frowning: Let’s try again.

Pictures! I have pictures! Swampy & me. We had a nice dinner. **Swampy **summed it up nicely. I had lots of fun at dinner. I think I have enough pasta for lunch tomorrow *and *Friday.

Awwwwwwwwww! I just want to hug you both!
